Glock refuses to sign on to
Smith & Wesson deal

March 21, 2000
Web posted at: 6:40 p.m. EST (2340 GMT)

SMYRNA, Georgia (CNN) -- Glock Inc., one of
the nation's top pistol makers, announced Tuesday it
would not sign on to an agreement reached between
fellow gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson and
federal and city governments on mandatory gun
safety requirements.

Glock refused to sign on because the company
wanted the right to make its business decisions
without any interference from the government, said
Paul Jannuzzo, Glock vice president and general
counsel.

"We will not subject ourselves to the monitoring of
this commission," he said, referring to a commission
of government representatives and Smith & Wesson
officials that will monitor compliance of that
company's agreement.

Jannuzzo said Glock already has adopted many of
the provisions proposed in the Smith & Wesson
agreement, but is fundamentally opposed to signing
onto the deal.

"It's not a reasonable agreement," Jannuzzo said.
"They're going to try to control a consumer's
behavior."

He said Glock reached its decision during a
conference call among top executives Tuesday.

Thirty cities had sued gun manufacturers to recover
the costs associated with gun violence and the federal
government, citing crime in public housing, which had
threatened to begin litigation of its own.

To avoid those suits, Smith & Wesson signed an
agreement Friday to install gun locks and other
child-safety devices on all guns and introduce
"smart-gun" technology in all newly designed
handguns.

Smith & Wesson also promised to put a hidden
second serial number on handguns to make it easier
to trace guns.

"I understand the business decision that was made,"
said Jannuzzo. "I'm just tired of this extortion."

"This thing is a ridiculous red herring," he said.

It is sad when another country has to teach us how to be free and stand up for freedom with a backbone.

I think I am going to go buy another Glock ;)

Glock Won't Sign Gun-Control Deal
By CHAD ROEDEMEIER, Associated Press Writer

SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) -- Glock Inc. will not sign a voluntary gun-control agreement similar to the one reached last week between Smith & Wesson Corp. and the Clinton administration, the company said Tuesday.

The deal-breaker was the creation of an outside ''oversight commission,'' made up of local, state and federal officials, who would supervise the gun manufacturer. ''The commission is an absurd concept,'' said Paul Jannuzzo, vice president and general counsel of the Smyrna-based company, a unit of Glock GmbH of Austria. ''It's overly broad. It's more powerful than any regulatory agency.''

Last week, Smith & Wesson, the nation's largest gun manufacturer, agreed to make its handguns more childproof by installing safety locks and developing ''smart gun'' technology. Smith & Wesson also agreed to the same oversight commission that Glock opposes.

Smith & Wesson accepted the restrictions in exchange for some protection against lawsuits. At least 15 of 29 cities and counties that had sued the gun industry have agreed to drop Smith & Wesson from their lawsuits.

Any changes at Glock, however, will not be made with an eye toward avoiding lawsuits, Jannuzzo said.

''Nobody's going to drop any of these lawsuits unless we sign on to the commission,'' Jannuzzo said. ''And we will never do that.''

Instead of adopting the entire agreement, Glock will consider ''sensible and workable'' parts of the plan, Jannuzzo said.

Such elements might include keeping an electronic record of sales and requiring employees to pass a written exam. Those steps go beyond current federal law.

Is there an email address to contact Glock on this? I understand their website has been 'under construction' for quite awhile. If Glock is indeed refusing to cooperate with this 'voluntary' deal, they should have as much support from gun owners as S&W has had disapproval.

Ahhh...geez, now I'm gonna hafta buy a Glock.

;)

well, at least it will be a .45

Great news (for once). I hope they and the other manufacturers can hang in there until the elections, without compromising. I've only been into "guns" for the past 3 years, but I suspect the push for gun control has never been quite so relentless. Was it this ridiculous in the 60s? Actually, I hope the democrats push the issue so hard that it backfires on them in November. They seem to have forgotten what happened to them in Congress in 1994.

Glock is the only maker that I don't have in my safe. I think that I am going to have to buy one and send them in the receipt with an encouragement letter.
All my handguns are revolvers (magnum of course). any ideas or recommendations for my first glock?

A Glock 20/29 (10mm) or Glock 31/32/33 (.357sig) would be a nice complement to a brace of magnum revolvers.

Dang, now I might have to stop saying Glock owners are sensitive. :D :D

Although I personally do not care for Glocks, I commend them for their stance. Lets just hope all the other gun companies band together.

Dear Mr Jannuzzo,

YOU’RE A HERO.

I will spare no breath when informing everyone I know and meet that Clinton (aka Billzebubba) and his cadre are no better than extortionists and blackmailers. I commend you and Mr. Glock for having the courage to stand up to these coercive bottom-feeders.
