Honor Guard thoughts

I just saw the new Honor Guard sub compact. I am looking for thoughts as it is too new to be available for rental. Reviews have been great. Thanks

I am always a bit skeptical about these new gun manufacturers until their products are well proven and the company looks like it has staying power and a reputation for good warranty service and parts availability. A company named "Caracal" proved to be a disaster even after so many were sure they were going to be a Glock killer.

Honor Guard's first entry is going up against some very stiff competition of proven pistols like Shield, Walther PPS, and Glock 43 which also have mostly massive aftermarket support including holsters. Unless it proves to be better than these in some way IMO they are going to have a tough time.

My first thought is "Why?". When there are quality compact polymer single stack pistols already available from known manufacturers like S&W, Glock, and Kahr, I don't see any reason to look at guns in the same price range from an unknown company that brings nothing new to the table. Also, I have a hard time taking a gun company seriously when they make a pistol with a dust cover extension to keep it in battery during "contact" shots.

their 2 years warranty turn me off

nothing stand out to make it worth more than Shield or many existing sub compact, I wouldn't mind to give it a try to help new young USA company, but in return they will reject me after 2 years....sorry.

yeah, I'm all about competition in the market as it usually accelerates innovation. I have a desire for anyone sticking their neck out with the type of resources required to create a new firearms company to succeed and I don't wish ill will on them.

That being said, this is about as likely to succeed as another new mid-tier 1911 or AR15 manufacturer. If you're going to do the startup thing, you can't do the same thing that has been done by 8 or 10 other companies (longstanding companies, some of which have been around for over a century) unless you bring something new and exciting to the table. I don't see where this pistol brings anything new to the table. Not the lightest, not the smallest, not an improvement in capacity for size/weight...

I'm not as sure as one or two here that the FIST is a bad idea. A lot of people go with snub revolvers due to the chance of an auto going out of battery in a close contact encounter. My only question is, did they have to make it so big and ugly? Also, I'm not sure it is enough of a feature to make this gun standout (and it does seem gimmicky). I'd wait a while to see if it turns out to be reliable, and to see how well it sells. It would be a shame to spend your hard earned money on a new product and then find in a year or two there is no support, there are no parts, and there are no accessories for the gun (especially a self defense handgun where things like holster availability will be a big deal)

Looks kind of like a Shield knockoff. The FIST thing looks almost as practical as a bayonet on a pistol,

To the OP, welcome to The Firing Line.

As for your question of how I view it, from the link provided by another member I have to say I am not sure I would want a 7-lb trigger pull.

That will not compete well against the Ruger LCP-S, or the Walther PPS M2, or the Glock 43, or the Shield PC. These all have better triggers.

A 7-lb. trigger isn't necessarily bad IF it is a smooth 7-lb. trigger that doesn't include any strange kinks or stops during the pull and doesn't have an irritating trigger face or edge that becomes painful with use.

The chance of that is not great in a modestly-priced gun, and I'd have to handle such a gun, and dry-fire it before I'd risk buying it.

The latest issue of American Handgunner showed up in my mailbox today. I mean the old-fashioned kind of mailbox, but they do have a website which might eventually show the article on:

the Honor Guard

Don't ask me, I haven't read it yet.

If you sharpen the FIST:)
It might not be a terrible idea. I'd hate to see the first posts here about rails under handguns. Now everyone pretty much takes them for granted.

Review posted on Gunblast.com.

And again no link...folks forget how to post links to articles they reference?

Here...

Now in the Honor Defense website they have links to the useful articles from the American Rifleman.

As mentioned in AR, the FIST feature was available about a decade back on some CZ pistols. Some one else offered it as well but I don't recall who. There was some adapters for this for 1911s as well.

I'd look at one and would like to shoot one before I'd buy.

The company is out of Atlanta. Too bad their site doesn't tell you much about who they are or why they set up shop.

They highlight that they are made entirely in the U.S. which must be a jab at Glock.

I'd describe as more like "lean on" the statement. The effectiveness of such marketing seems to strongly correlate directly with age in my experience. I'd hate to start a company making polymer pistols with odd ball features and lean on marketing that is most effective with people who remember the 60s and 70s. 1% of the market can probably keep a small company swimming in orders though.

Op here. I just purchased it yesterday. After firing it I found the trigger far superior to the shield.. As far as service I had a few questions and the president of the company responded almost immediately. Yes others are out there in the class but there were many feat urea that I and my fiance liked better in the HG than the shield or G43. Just my opinion

That FIST thing looks about as stupid as some of Taurus' lame brain ideas. Like see through side plates, curved semi autos, and litle wingie thingies on the back of the slide.
