Feb. 21 - COMMERCE CITY - A trio of would-be robbers with a knife met a homeowner with a gun Saturday night, officials said.

Homeowner: 2

Would-be robbers: 0

Two men were in serious condition Sunday night at Denver Health Medical Center after being shot by the resident of a home they were trying to rob, according to the Adams County Sheriff's Department.

Their alleged partner in the scheme, Elizabeth Staley, 19, of unincorporated Jefferson County, was not hurt and was charged with suspicion of aggravated robbery, Sheriff's Sgt. Craig Coleman said.

The two men, who were not identified by police, most likely will be charged with aggravated robbery as well, officials said.

"As soon as they get out of the hospital, we'll be there to meet and greet them," Coleman said.

The trio apparently had planned to rob an acquaintance in the 7300 block of Leyden Street, officials said.

The three entered the house at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. One of them pulled a knife, police said.

That's when the 39-year-old homeowner, whom police did not identify, went for his a semi-automatic handgun.

"The homeowner pulled out the gun and shot the two men," Coleman said.

He said the three fled the house, piled into a car and drove to a home in the 6500 block of East 63rd Avenue, where one of their cousins lived.

It was from there they called an ambulance, and police said they arrived soon after.

While I have used the score thing in the past, I had not seen it used in a news article regarding to Home Owner v Crooks before.

Of course that is just more proof that somebody with a firearm is more likely to shoot an acquaintance or family member.

Jim V....in the vast majority of cases we will shoot someone we know. Shooters always think it is the baggy pants stranger. That is seldom the case. Just because you KNOW the person doesn't mean you can't defend yourself from them. I had a guy in class who had a carry permit to protect him from his son who broke into his house twice and beat him for a PIN number to get cash for a drug habit.
33 women were murdered in Minnesota last year and 3 of those were killed by strangers. Most conflicts will be with those around us including neighbors, family members, co-workers etc.
The guy in Denver did good work but whatever he was shooting didn't perform to well or he didn't, but in a REAL shooting things never go as planned.
