homemade targets

need some ideas for targets, punching holes in paper gets boring after awhile. i bought some spinners and clay holders want some ideas to keep my wife and daughter interested. dont know if my range will allow exploding targets so i guess untill i find out thats out of question.

Golf balls with wood screw in tied to string and dangled, Ballons blown up small,9MM cases glued to a pc of wood,1/4 inch dowel sticks in the dirt, and last but not least(did this one 2 weeks ago for real) Peanut butter on target and wait for flies.

Tennis balls on a string hung from whatever you have handy. Helium filled balloons would also be interesting, as they would blow around in even the slightest wind(walmart used to have little tanks of helium, not sure if they still do) could also hang the balloons like the tennis balls if you can't find the small tanks of helium at a local retailer. The balloons would be a pain to clean up though. Depending on the range, a bucket full of the little plastic army men make fun .22 plinkers and *usually* aren't too bad to clean up. You could also use paper mache and/or plaster of paris to make whatever you can think of.

I like the green plastic army men idea. I use to shoot them with my BB gun when I was a kid.;) Thanks for the memory

I like to buy cheep no name brand soda cans. They explode when shot. I all so like Golf balls with a nail in them hanging from a string.

I once bought some tannerite. That is awesome stuff! Too bad it is so expensive.

I saw what looked like fun on TV a few nights back. A couple of 2x4’s in the ground like a fence post. Have two people with equal rifles or handguns and shoot until one cuts the 2x4 in half. First board to get cut in half is the winner.

Fun targets that break that you don’t have clean up are Ritz crackers, or those Neco wafers, things like that. The birds will eat them when you leave.

Instant, Spectacular Feedback

For centerfire rifle targets, nothing beats water filled plastic bottles/jugs....

Gallon jugs are just about the right size to represent the vuital zone of a deer, too..........

I love shooting golf balls. It's good practicing on something so small and it's good practice trying to keep track of them when they go bouncing off. Shoot with someone else using a different color ball and see who wins in a race.

Use sawhorse legs,,,

One of the things I have found that works very well,,,
I bought a set of inexpensive sawhorse legs,,,
I mount spinners on the horizontal 2 x 6.

But it's the sawhorse legs that makes it portable as all heck.

Anyone shot the backsides of cast iron fry pans? The cheep pans would be only good for small calibre rounds but should let out a good ping sound when hit :)

Fire extinguishers

Places that service fire extinguishers often throw them out, some charged some not. A charged fire extinguisher is best, quite a spectacular show. There is still powder left after the intitial hit to make subsequent hits fun to watch.

Make a stop by your local grocery store for produce they're discarding. Free biodegradable targets, and exploding lettuce heads are entertaining.

I've had great enjoyment out of my 1' piece of I-beam steel. Holds up really well to handgun rounds. Our range has me set it at the 40 yard line.

Thumbtacks stuck in the top of a board. Put up two rows of 10 tacks each, whoever makes them all disappear first wins.

The 4"-6" solid rubber bouncey balls. Set it on the ground and 50yds and compete with your range partner to "bounce" them to whatever your desired range is.

Hockey pucks. Drill a hole 3/4" from the edge, tie a string and hang at 300yds.

Drive 10-penny nails through a piece of plywood.

Make your spent shotgun shell hulls bounce around, works real well after the ground is good and iced up in the winter, the hulls bounce around real good on the ice. If you're good with your semi-auto .22lr, you can make the hulls bounce up in the air a foot or two, then hit them again while in the air.

Fill an old pop bottle up with water (use food coloring if you like) and put the cap back on. Lay the bottle on it's side with the cap facing 90* to your barrel direction. Shoot the cap off and empty the bottle.

Small party baloons. To make it more visual, put a teaspoon of baby powder in the baloons before you blow them up and set them out on the range.

Cheap old chain (thin links). Shoot the links off one by one with a .22lr.

Dum-dum suckers, staple the sucker sticks to a board and shoot the sucker part with a .22.

Old baby carrots, any old produce that's trashcan bound really.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
