Homemade guns?

If someone possessed the skill (I certainly don't) to make their own gun (handgun, rifle, shotgun) from scratch, for their own personal use, would it be legal to do so? I've toyed with the idea of taking machining courses at the local community college to do just that. I'm not sure, however, if even that course of action would give me enough skill to build my own gun, especially in light of my previous forays into basic woodworking.

Any and all opinions/thoughts are welcome.

Actually, yes you can make your own firearms, (no NFA & preban mil type configs) but not for resale. Check the ATF website.

Do state laws prempt that?
In CA its illegal to make or possess a "zip" gun...."zip" is pretty vague in definition

You must have a Federal Firearms Manufacturers License in order to legally manufacture your own. Ironically the class I manufactures FFL is $150 for three (3) years as opposed to $200 for a standard FFL and the manufactures FFL can also be used in the same manner as the standard license. The requirments are the same for obtaining either however you must plan to actually build guns to obtain the manufactures license. So no, you can't just save the 50 bucks to get the cheaper license. :)

The beginners kit for a single shot shotgun is available at your local hardware store. No machining or welding necessary. All you need is ...

No, I won't tell you.

I've seen pictures of the first model of SMG the IRA made (welding and machining required).

Dal: The machining techniques needed to build guns aren't all THAT difficult! Remember, they've actually been made prior to the invention of modern machine tools; If you can do it with gouges, hammers, and files, you can sure do it with a combination lathe/drill/mill. And buying a machine shop setup could actually be cheaper than purchasing that .50 carbine I've been lusting over.

OK folks, lets *NOT* spread BS like the anti's. Lets deal with the facts here, straight from the ATF website:
(sorry if this doesn't linewrap properly)

[18 U.S.C. 921(a)(3), (24), and (31), 922(w), 27 CFR 178.11 and 178.40a]
(A7) Does the GCA prohibit anyone from making a handgun, shotgun or rifle?

With certain exceptions a firearm may be made by a nonlicensee provided it is not for sale and the maker is not prohibited from possessing firearms.
However, a person is prohibited from making a semiautomatic assault weapon or assembling a nonsporting semiautomatic rifle or nonsporting shotgun from
imported parts. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax
payment and approval by ATF. An application to make a machinegun will not
be approved unless documentation is submitted showing that the firearm is
being made for a Federal or State agency.

I stand corrected Nukem, thank you.
