Homemade 9mm and bolt questions

I recently tackled a home built pepper box and had a blast (no pun intended). After this however, I am eyeing the semi-auto home builds. I found a set of plans that seems fairly easy to build and is a design that I like.

However, the plans require the bolt be made from a piece of 1 inch diameter steel with the front half lathed down to 15mm. I don't have a lathe. I have tried thinking of ways to replace it with a simpler bolt of my design, but can't think of any plausible options.
So my question is if you guys have any ideas on ways to modify the design so that the bolt is a little easier to build?
I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but any recommendations are welcome.

Find a local machine shop to mill that down to 15mm. I wouldn't think that would be an expensive cost and probably will be an easy setup. then you're back on the road again.
 
You have a flat milling machine?

I believe that this round bolt can be made without having to be round. If you mill the thing into a polygon, say an octagon or even dodecagon, If you place the points or angles so to speak at a 1" diameter, you have created a sort of round 1" diameter stock.

I agree that taking it to any machine shop or competent gunsmith would be the easiest course.
 
"...Find a local machine shop..." Cost a fortune. Last time I looked, machine shops ran over $100 per hour plus set up time. And you'll require machinists drawings that also cost a bundle. The drawings in the .pdf are not machinists drawings.
The only time doing stuff like this is cost effective is when you do everything yourself.
 
Seems to me the easiest thing to do would be use square tubing instead of round and modify the designs to fit. Should be easy enough. Square bolt, square trunnion.

That's assuming you have a mill
 
I don't have a mill. I was hoping to do this project with fairly common tools. If that's not possible, then I will probably have to move on. I was thinking to drill the hole on a 15 mm piece, then find the center of the 1 inch piece, align them, weld them, and then drill the hole through the entire bolt. Do you think this would work?
 
Before mills and lathes, gunsmiths used what is called a "file." Either learn to use one or get the tools you need.
