Home Protection

Hi, im looking for a sidearm for home protection. I need a reliable weapon but love some old school pistols. What do you suggest?
Thanx

get prepared for a MASSIVE variety of peoples best HD gun opinions.
all valid btw.

If it feels good in your hand, is reliable, and you know how to work it, with confidence in pitch black darkness, go with it.

I would suggest a revolver of some kind. In my opinion it would be a Ruger GP100 in .357/.38 special. My reasoning for this is that a revolver can be left loaded indefinitely without worry of springs being depressed to long or most malfunctions. A revolver is also a great option because it is easily put into action in a high stress situation. Very simple and very affective. You can also shoot the .38 special for range use to hone in your skills. A great HD gun is one that you can manipulate and use in a HD situation. IMO a GP100 fits the bill.

I think it's best to get what ever fits your hand and needs best.

If you are looking to "just" have a weapon to protect your family a pump 12ga shotgun would be a better HD option IMO. But seeing how you said you want a pistol look at a CZ 75B. It's available in 9mm and .40 S&W and has a great feel to it as well as being super accurate!

I would also suggest a double action revolver of some sort chambered in 38 special / 357 magnum. They're reliable, simple to operate and maintain, and can be loaded with a variety of ammunition from heavy hunting loads to light target rounds. An all around general purpose handgun. I tend to be partial to the Ruger GP100/Service Six series myself.

If you are not interested in shooting as a hobby, then a DA revolver is probably a good idea. When under stress, there is less chance for operator error, such as no slide to rack, etc.

That said, you need to practice with any handgun enough to insure minimal competency. Obviously, you don't want to shoot wildly anywhere, much less your own home.

What is your background/experience level? Have you shot many handguns?

Thank you

I agree xfire, the shotgun is is a great choice but im more comfortable with two hands on a pistol. My uncle taught me how to shoot with his bodyguard 380 but i dont like the small size or lightness. Im a very sufficient shooter and a great shot.

HD will always be a stress event. If you consider simplicity and some other very important points, the sp101 or other DA revolver will be your best choice.

When a crisis comes, a person picks up a loaded gun, aims, and pulls the trigger. there are 6 rounds available, and no round on the market can claim that it is significantly better at disabling a man than a .357 load.

If I'm some night dragged out of sleep and confronted with an intruder, I'm probably going to die. I'm barely able to move my fingers. My only hope for survival is that my .357 is loaded, in a drawer, by my bed, and after thousands of rounds through it and other pistols, I could probably fire it in my sleep. I probably couldn't even get the safety off of my browning and cock it.

Thank god my wife will be there telling me what to do.

Asking a question like that on this forum is akin to asking a total stranger to pick out a woman for you to marry...

Find a reliable gun that you are comfortable with and use it.

Good advice, so far. I prefer the 1911 in .45 ACP for my HD, simply because it is what I carry. The gun comes off my belt and goes on the nightstand. Other than that there are far too many choices to list in one post, and therefore they will be listed in everybody else's. Ultimately, it is you that has to be happy with the choice. Rent as many as is practicable and see what fits your hand best, is most comfortable, you are most accurate with, etc. Even try the same gun in different calibers. Eventually, you'll find one you can't live without. Unfortunately, sometimes that is after a few purchases. But, isn't that part of the fun?;)

I'm another guy who loves the 1911. But my home defense guns are S&W 4" k-frame 357 revolvers, loaded with 38+P rounds - the famous "FBI load." I feel very confident that this would serve well if ever needed.

357mag/38spl revolver with around a 4" barrel is what I would suggest. No switches to fumble with, operable with either hand (or both), no worries about jamming, lots less cleaning and lubing involved. For the average citizen who doesn't shoot very much, a revolver is an excellent home defence option. Much easier for "the old lady" to use if she needs to. I'm not against autos, I own quite a few and carry them frequently. But for a "nightstand" or "all-arounder" I'd always reccommend a good, solid Smith or Ruger wheelgun. Just my 2cents
