Home Defense

Well, I finally put the first part of my plan into place. I thought maybe my luck was about to run out or at least it could run out, so for the first time in my fairly long life I have a loaded gun in my bedroom ready to go at a moments notice. After reading lots of posts I went with the best I had which was a .410 pump shotgun. 4 shells in the magazine, 0 in the chamber. I have two 12 guage remington semiauto's but safety was a concern. I am probably going to get a 12 guage pump fairly soon if this trade goes through. My .410 is loaded with 3" #4 shells. Anyway I like reading the posts you all put up here and wanted to put in my two cents.

Go find some 3" OOO buckshot. They have 5 pellets now and are a pretty formidable self defense load, IMO.

I would use one of the Remingtons, unless they are big 28" duck guns or something. Just be very explicit and clear with any kids and remember the 4 rules (see below) and you should be golden. .410 wouldn't be my first choice but if the 12ga is absolutely a no go then use either slug or 00 Buck in the .410.

Here's the rules, hopefully, probably you're already familiar with them. Know them, practice them and make sure every member of your household does the same. http://www.thefiringline.com/Misc/safetyrules.html

I think the 410 will do the job but I would go with buckshot as the others said. I have tested birdshot a lot and it just does not penetrate as much as it needs to for a defensive application.

Just a heads up. With safety a concern, that 00 or 000 buck will go the same place wheather it comes out of a 12 or 410 if the velocity is the same.

Good point, olddrum1. Some shooters mistakenly assume the little .410-bore is little more than a BB-gun on steroids. As you noted, the individual pellets have the same energy and velocity as a 12-ga, there's just fewer of them.

Thanks a lot! I am studying up on all of your advice and comments. No bad guys coming around so far. Thanks be to God! I really don't think any bad guys will come around, however, What If?

You really don't ever want to think like that, I'm just saying the minute you do, you might be very surprised. :D The fact is, you never know. And I for one, never ever turn it off. It doesn't matter if I'm in the bed, in the shower, in my car, at work or at the grocery store, I'm always as ready as I can be. It's not being paranoid, It's being prepared. You never want to let your guard down, not even for a second. Unless It's one of those ninjas we all talk about on here, then you never had a chance to begin with!

Unless you live in a rural area, how quickly we forget...

L.A. riots some time back and more recently, New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Every law abiding citizen ought to have a short barrel shotgun. Some in here frequently post the W.S.H.T.F. like it's some sort of appocaliptic (know I misspelled that one) kind of thing, S.H.T.F. can come in several varieties, i.e. any emergency situation whether man made or mother nature. Point being in all of this, your world could change abruptly and overnight depending on situations beyond your control. While things, your locale etc etc, may seem secure and of no threat presently could change in a near instant, so from my perspective there is no such thing as "I don't think I need a shotgun but may be a good thing to have around" kind of quote. Unless perhaps you live in a very rural kind of environment. Thus, buy that bad boy!

The little .410 pump stoked with some buckshot would be a formidable
platform for an HD weapon.

I would rather have a 12 ga. but would not in the least feel under-
gunned with a .410 pump shotgun stoked with the right stuff.

I get what you all are saying and I agree. I do live in a very rural area but bad guys can come from anywhere. Remember the Clutter family? I've had my share of heartache but I have been lucky that no one has come around my home that attempted to physically harm me or my family. Most of my life I was unprepared if they did. Not any longer! Not only that, I find I enjloy looking at, learning about and even buying guns.
