Home Defense Suppressor Recommendations

Hi Everyone,

I am converting a sig p556 into an SBR and i'd like to have it as a home defense option. With that said, I wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations with respect to a .223 suppressor? Since youtube videos don't really tell you anything, I'm hoping that current .223 suppressor owners can give me some input.

I'm looking for the following:
1. minimal sound ( i must be able to shoot it with no protection without going deaf I have heard of suppressors that still require hearing even after using protection. This is assuming i am NOT using subsonic ammunition)

2. Minimal flash from the barrel. ( since this is for home defense purposes, it is highly likely that if needed, I will use the weapon in pitch black conditions)

3. Accuracy- I do not want to sacrifice accuracy at all, since I'm already dealing with a 10 inch barrel.

4. Heat Dissipation- I know some suppressors change as they heat up, which can affect bullet trajectory, etc. Want to avoid this if at all possible.


I'm by no means a suppressor specialist, any input would be greatly appreciated!
 
I've been looking at the AWC Raider... i'm not sure if it's worth it to get the THOR version or not. Anyone shot these before?
 
Let's see, you shoot someone, in the dark, with a suppressed SBR, and you are also concerned about how fast the suppressor heats up? That really, really doesn't sound like home defense to me, and likely won't to the police and the prosecutors, either. I don't think its a very good idea to use a piece like that for home defense, unless its the only gun you own, and even then, its not a good idea.

Remember that even if it looks clear cut and legitmate to you, it may not to someone else. And they will take your firearm as evidence until it is all legally resolved. I'm not trying to knock your choice in arms, only your choice in a suitable application for the one you have. Think what a jury of non gun owners (and the DA) is going to make of it, if you ever do use it for "home defense". They are not likely to be inclinded in your favor. I would expect rather the opposite, in fact.

Ok, sorry, I just assumed you were in the USA. If you are in some other nation where you might face terrorist/bandit attack at home, that's another situation.

In "pitch black" conditions, that means short range, and any effect of a suppressor on rifle accuracy will be negligable. The same for change in trajectory from heat build up. At the short ranges you will be able to identify a target (even with night vision optics) any change in trajectory is also unimportant.

Home defense implies inside the home (again, in the USA), using supersonic ammo with a suppressor removes (attenuates) the muzzle blast. Inside a building, that's all you are going to hear anyway. The crack of a supersonic bullet as it passes close to objects down range doesn't apply inside a room.

You can certainly use the gun as a home defense option, but there are many, many more suitable options availabe...which I think you ought to consider for "home defense" over your present choice.
 
I have both the AAC M4-1000 and 2000. The 2000 is smaller and lighter but costs a lot more. I shoot my 10.5" ar without plugs but it makes more noise than a 20" for sure. Flash is not too bad with the powders I use. I doubt you will have a home SD situation where you could over heat either one but you don't want to touch it right after a few mag dumps either.

With respect to the heat, I guess I just mentioned that because of course I am going to take the suppressor to the range and practice with it. Only in that situation i would think heat would come into play. That being said, did you have any suppressor recommendations?

Besides the costs of the 1000 and 2000, is there any performance difference? Is the cost difference due mainly to weight of materials?
