Home Defense - Springfield Armory XD(M)

I was debating on getting one of their 4.5" Full Size (9MM) models to keep near for protection and was wondering if anyone out there had a similar model they could give any feedback on.

I also want a laser grip if possible. I see they make one with the Optical Site (OSP) but for home defense, I don't know if the OSP would be a good idea because it would more than likely be dark in the home and was leaning more towards just a laser grip type configuration but not really sure.

Why Springfield Armory? Well, I just personally like the feel of them. For Home Defense I know a shotgun would be the ideal choice, or even an AR but I'd also like a pistol nearby as well. I had a shotgun before but it just sat there and I never used it. That's a good thing though. But with a pistol I could at least take it to the range and use it.

Thanks for any ideas about the XD(M) series.

I have a XD9 Tactical, 5". Bought it when they were not as common, maybe 14 years ago?? We had done some testing at work, the testers shot these the best, and I wanted a service type gun for training. I too thought it felt good in the hand plus it could shoot any 9mm ammo with lead being no problem. Never a problem with it over all those years and it still shoots great. I used it just a couple of weeks ago to recertify for my LE instructor certification and it delivered a clean score on the first attempt. I would not hesitate to get another one if I needed something similar. YMMV

I have many handguns, including the XDm you are referring to. I like mine. It is accurate, and soft shooting for me. They come with three 19rd steel magazines. It would make a great night stand, home defense pistol. If possible, find a range that has one for you to try.

I have an XD 9mm service and also an XD 45 service model. I bought them years ago before the newer models came out. I wouldn't trade them or sell them....no problems whatsoever.

It would be a good choice. I think the XD Tactical (now Mod.2) plus night sights would be a better investment for the price.

@rpseraph

Yeah, I was debating on something like that but not sure about having to turn on things in the heat of the moment, especially after being woke up. I kinda like the laser grips where you don't have to "think" to use them. I'm just worried about trying to fumble around gadgets not being fully awake that's all. I guess with plenty of practice that might help though. There's enough ambient light in our home where a light might not be needed because when I wake up I can see things fairly well because my eyes are adjusted but a red-dot laser would certainly be useful. Still debating on what I really need though. Thanks for the info!

My BIL has one. Shoots well and is reliable. If you like it and it points well, I can not think of any negative attributes.
