Home defense shotgun: Quick access security

Just added a 12ga 1100 with 20" bbl & extended mag to the home defense system and am looking for suggestions on how best to safely store it without compromising quick access. I have a closet with accordian doors close to my side of the bed where I want to mount the 1100 to the wall out of site, but where I can reach in without looking. We keep our defense pistol in a GunVault (www.gunvault.com) safe. This works great. Wanted to buy one of their LongGun Vaults but found out an autoloader won't fit.

Just curious what other people do, especially those with kids in the house. I see lots of posts where a scattergun is the primary pillar of their home defense system. How are you locking them up?

A lot of people are using the Mossberg "Lock Box".

This is a steel box attached to a wall, floor, even the ceiling with long lag bolts.

The action is opened slightly, and the gun is placed into the box, the box front is closed and locked, and the gun is secure.

There is a separate hook that's also attached to the surface that is inserted into the muzzle of the gun as it's put in the box.
This secures the muzzle, so the gun can't be used as a lever to twist and pull the box off the surface.

The advantages of the Lock Box are: the gun can't be loaded, operated, unloaded, or otherwise tampered with, and it can't be removed from the area, or stolen.

Access is with a key.

These are illustrated on the Mossberg web site, and these can be bought at good discounts with a little research on the web.

Other's are using one of the cable or trigger locks.
One man I know has his cable lock looped through a pair of large eyes screwed into a stud, then through the gun.

if the closet is wide enough, you could simply hang it directly above the door inside the closet. Very easily accessible but not very easily seen unless you walk into the closet, turn around, and look up.

Interesting - had not come across that one. Says it works with an 1100 but I am curious how you would leave it stored. Tube mag loaded, empty chamber, action closed? The description is a bit confusing making me think that I can't leave it loaded:

Includes steel constructed "muzzle hook" that aids in preventing unauthorized users from gaining leverage in attempt to access weapon. Chamber hook inhibits operation of action & the ability to load firearm while secured with the Loc Box

Thanks for the ideas.

Yes, you can leave it in "cruiser ready" loaded condition.

This is: the magazine is loaded, the chamber is empty, the hammer is not cocked.

The gun "hangs" from TWO hooks. The one on the wall for the muzzle, and a smaller one inside the box, that fits into the slightly opened bolt.

To use the box, you load the gun, open the action SLIGHTLY (not enough to cock the hammer), slip the muzzle over the wall hook, and place the slightly opened bolt recess over the hook that's INSIDE the box.
Close the box and lock it.

This is a good system, somewhat like the electronic racks used in police cars. The gun is more or less exposed, can be removed quickly, but can't be loaded, removed, or tampered with.

On man has his mounted upright, beside a bed-side window.
The curtains cover the gun, unless you pull the curtains open, you can't detect the gun, but it's still accessible from his bed.
