Home Defense Ammo For 9mm

Ok, i got another question for everyone out there.

I will be getting my new Glock 19 in the next couple weeks, and i need to decide what ammo to use for home defense.

I was always partial to Corbon when i used my .357 mag, but i am not sure what i should use for 9mm.

I have heard about federals new expanding full metal jacket rounds, but i havent heard much feedback about those.

The other question is, if you happen to have to use hollowpoint bullets in a defensive situation, are there any legal implications. I am concerned over what an over eager DA might do.

As always, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unless there are laws against hollowpoints in your jurisdiction (New Jersey comes to mind) then JHP's are the PREFERRED defense ammo for a 9mm. Just be darned sure it's a legally justifiable shooting before you pull the trigger.

For specific ammo, find out what police departments (preferably near you) who issue 9mm's are using - if it's a 115-127 grain JHP at +P or +P+ velocity, try a few boxes through your pistol to confirm reliability, and use that.

I've had very good accuracy and flawless reliability from Speer 124gr +P GoldDots in my Sig P228. It is often cited as one of the best 9mm defensive rounds. YMMV, so buy several brands and test fire them for reliability/accuracy.

I would have to second the Speer 124gr +P GoldDots. There very reliable in all my 9MM.
One other very good choice would be the
Remington's 124 grain Golden Saber +P

There is an issue of G & A on the news stands now (its a hybrid mag 1/2 articules 1/2 gun list) that has an articule on this issue. (Without starting an argument) they referenced 115 +P HydroShoks or the +P+ LE version (if you can get some )as the way to go. With this round I think they quoted 90% one shot stops.

I don't know if I agree with all of the author's comments but it was pretty logical in some respects.
Take care.

I have used/tried all different types of 9mm ammo in my pistols but I have settled on 2 ammo for self defense. For non +P ammo I use Federal 115gr JHP (9BP) as this ammo is very reliable and very accurate in every pistol I have tried it in. For +P ammo I use Remington 115gr JHP as this ammo is gives about 75-100 fps more velocity and still feed reliably in all my pistols. Another plus for Remington +P JHP ammo is that they can usually be found at your local Wal-Mart at reasonable price.

Home Defense Ammo 9mm

Standard pressure-can't beat Pro Load 115 JHP @1280 fps. That is almost +p (1300 fps) in a standard pressure bullet. Most reliable ammo I have tried. Can practically put one hole into another at 25 yards. In + P try the 124 gr. bullet. This is the load my Hi Power loves. Most Accurate ammo on the market.

Regarding JHP for defensive round...

In response to the JHP for defensive purposes be a legal issue.
IMO the use of hollow points is imperative for a defensive round.
The object is to stop the aggressor before he is aggressive with you/loved one. The energy is transfered from the bullet to the
target/person in a much better way with hollow points. This energy transfer is what stops BG's. My theory in using FMJ for defense is this. What ever your bullet hits is your legal responsibility..person, property etc. If you shoot a BG with a stout FMJ 9mm you have a good chance of full penetration..with
a bullet hitting what ever is behind him after going thru him.
This is the legal issue I would worry about...full pen. flyers.
Plus you have less "energy transference" needed to stop
the BG. Thus requiring more rounds to stop him/shoot the things
behind him. NOT GOOD. IMO there is no other choice than JHP.

I shoot gold dot 124gr JHP in my 9mm's.

Shoot well

Several good types of ammo mentioned here. What's most important, though, is that whatever you think is effective ammo is DEFINITELY reliably-feeding ammo in your own pistol!

Good magazines that feed reliably, and lots of practice.

Home Defense

For home defense I prefer to use a shotgun and revolver, but thats just me. In 9mm defensive ammo, there is really quite a selection to choose from. Currently my G19, which I always carry, is loaded with Speer 124gr+p Gold Dots. During the summer it was loaded with Remington 115gr+p hollowpoints. Switched to the Gold Dots for better penetration for winter. For quality ammo at an inexpensive price, try the newer Winchester White Box Personal Protection ammo. My CZ75B is currently loaded with this. It is a standard pressure 115gr hollowpoint. In the CZ accuracy is superb. Testing has shown this round to perform like the newer Silvertips, about 12" of penetration and expansion around .61". Sports Authority sells this for $8.99 for a 50 round box, Wally Wolrd I think sells it for $10.96.

I like the standard 124 gr. Gold Dot for all purposes, except plinking ($$$). I'm a fan of anything with a jacket bonded to the lead core. It certainly stops those pesky jacket separations. I really don't like Cor-Bon because they tend to fragment. A real advantage to the Gold Dot is that Speer designs the hollow point cavity to get optimal performance in each caliber. IOW, they do not use the same design for every caliber, like most others do.

Oh, the above picture is an expanded Speer Gold Dot.:)

I was carrying Gold Dots, but here lately I've switched to 124 gr Nyclads. Their more accurate and the recoil is much more controlable. For some reason I've convinced myself that +p's don't gain that much out of my compact barrel. Anyone ever chonied the difference in a 3 inch barrel? I'll probably go back to my Gold dots in a week, but those blue bullets sure look cool.

I keep Federal EFMJ in my Glock 17 for use at home and away.

It's a 124 gr at 1180 fps. I like it. It seems to be a bit of a compromise round, but it works just fine. It feeds as reliably as any FMJ I've used. The expansion may not be as great as the hollow points mentioned here, but then this is a compromise round.

Plus, it blows up water bottles right purty.

Selfdfenz,

I don't think Federal makes a 115gr Hydra-Shok, do they?
The 124gr, 135gr (PD) and 147gr weights are the only ones I know of. Hydra-Shok is an excellent load though.

As for the question, I perfer G-A loaded 115gr +P+ Gold Dots out both my Glock 19 and Kahr K9. IMO, energy is the key to defense.
However, you might hit paydirt if you look into Triton's Quik-Shok line-up. This is what my PT-99 is loaded with (135gr) that lays by my bed.
