Holsters for two new handguns?

Just recently purchased two handguns: a full-size Kimber TLE, and a 3 inch S & W model 65. Would really like to get holsters for them, but I have no experience with holster selection. I'm not really looking for concealed holster carry. Something to carry when on a hike.

dentodoc,

If you're just looking for a hip holster to contain one of your guns on a hike in the woods, start by looking at the Cordua nylon holsters like Uncle Mike's. They're cheaper than a leather holster or most of the Kydex plastic ones. They should have a holster to fit the Kimber and the M65.

For a 1911 model, check CheaperThanDirt.com for their price on a Bianchi UM-84 style military holster to fit the 1911. This is a nylon military holster with a removeable flap. Can be carried right or left side, with or without the flap.

Galco makes good holsters at a reasonable price. There are a ton of custom makers who turn out some really fine work. There is a thread recently either here or on www.thehighroad.org that has a list of holster websites. Do a forum search with holster as the key word and I'm sure it'll be easy to find.

Good luck. If you end up like some people, you'll have more holsters than handguns. :o

See you in a week or so. :D

As a follow up... color me stupid.

Since you said hiking I presumed you wanted a holster that would protect the gun from contact with underbrush and would be worn outside a jacket or other covering garment.

If this isn't an issue, check out the Galco M7X thermoplastic holster. I bought one for $19.99 for my Glock 17 and it's very comfortable. I just received the same holster for my 1911 Springfield (M7X-212) and tried it out today. Same comfortable carry. The down side is that the "holster" only covers the trigger and the frame/slide area directly above it. There is about 2" of slide exposed at the front and rearward coverage stops about midline of the grip. In otherwords it's a "Yaqui Slide" kind of holster. But I like the quick on/off belt snap arrangement. This is very good if you need to remove it before, say, driving off in your car.

Hey Bill,

I think you came up with a good specific answer to a question. But why shouldn't we 'share the fun' of holster buying too? :D ;)
