Holster Makers-Gun Casts?

What kind of model guns do you use? Red, Blue, Aluminum? What's the best place to get them, meaning cheapest? My personal gun collection isn't anywhere big enough to just use them.:(

Well sorry I missed this..........
Aluminum dummies from Duncan Molds
Red guns.....take some work to get rid of the sharp edges
Blue guns from Rings are great
Airsoft guns as long as they are "exact" in size.

Hope this helps......if you want more info...just email me.
Shoot well.

Thank you, that is exactly what I wanted to know. Are only the high end airsofts exact, I wanted one of those anyway? I'll look up the aluminum but I imagine the blue one's are the way to go.

I take the real gun and a set of digital calipers to buy airsoft guns. They have to be exact and yould be surprised how many are.
Blue guns are nice if you dont press your holsters....If you press them, they will blow into 100 or so pcs. :D Trust me.......I press my horsehide because my arthritic thumbs cant mold the stubborn material.....my blue gun didnt do so well. Other than that they work as well as the real deal...................
Shoot well.

Most makers press there leather holsters w/the mold in place, between 2 pcs of foam or rubber....this gives the leather a general shape that custom makers start casing from.

Some Machine made holsters......Desantis, Bianchi and the likes, press them and then leave them alone.......you can tell because the shape of the gun is there and looks good, but lacks the detail that hand boning gives the holster on top of that.

I only press horsehide as its a mother to get to shape....my hands wont do it.
My cowhide holsters never see a press........

Shoot well.

I had assumed the manufactures' pressed their holsters between a positive cast and a negative mold. Wouldn't the foam/rubber need some kind of flexible weight behind it?

No.......just the mold....no casting. Its not needed....leather is pliable. You gotta remember, were not bending sheet metal........:D

Shoot well...........

By casting, I meant the plastic/aluminum cast of the gun itself. The dummy gun. "Gun Mold" isn't the right term since the "negative mold" is what the plastic is poured into to make the dummy (positive cast) gun. I realize the the gun mold term is used all the time though.

I've done plenty of metal casting in the past so I can't quite bring myself to call it that even if it makes more sense to other people.

OK......dummy gun. Thats all thats used. The rubber is forced against the leather/dummy gun and is sandwiched between to 3/8" steel plates at around 5-10 tons PSI for a couple of minutes. Its works very well...sometimes to well, some places you dont want alot of molding as it works against you.
Shoot well.

I see, I just thought the rubber would have been the negative mold in order to get anything but the highest points.

Thanks for all the information.

Ok.......forgive my lack of "proper molding/casting terminology". You were right....Closed Cell foam or very very soft rubber is used by most makers...it compresses to a point while not putting to much force on the leather/mold.

Thanks.......Shoot well.
