Holster For GP100

I am looking at a ruger GP100 .357mag with 4" barrel.

What I want to find before I buy it is a good holster for it (just to make sure there is one out there... odd, I know, but that’s me :p )

So please, suggest a good holster for a gp100, here are the specifications:

I don't need it for concealment, but it would be nice if I could conceal it at least short term (think walking from my front door to my car, answering the door, etc.)

I DON'T want a belt dependent holster, so I need something with a clip or a paddle holster or something.

Needs to be fitted for a GP100, no cheap cloth generic revolver holsters.

Does such a thing exist? I see fobus makes a paddle for a Taurus 66 but not for the GP100, what gives?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think you will be able to carry (even for a short time) a handgun the size/weight of a four-inch GP100 without a good belt. You may find a holster that does require a belt (e.g., clip or paddle), but you will still need a good belt, or you pants will down around your knees real fast.

Probably the only way you are going to conceal a GP100 (even just briefly) is with a high ride pancake (El Paso Saddlery make two good ones--one with a thumbsnap and one without) or a IWB (CABO makes an incredibly comfortable one--as comfortable as an OWB--for a weapon that size that conceals very well).

That’s what I was afraid of...

The problem is that I would like to find some way to carry it when I have to, without having to keep a big leather belt on at all times.

I also think you misunderstand what I mean by conceal. I am not 21 yet and I have no CCL, but starting Sep. 1st you can carry a concealed handgun in your car without a CCL. :D So when I mean concealed, I mean just out of sight for the short walk to the car. I just don't want to be waving to the neighbors with one hand and toting a giant revolver with the other...
That and answering the door, once again, doesn't need to be completely invisible, just out of direct sight of the unobservant...

Does anybody make holster belts that aren't dress leather? It would look kind of funny to walk around in a pair of trashed jeans, shorts, or whatnot with a nice shiny dress belt...

Actually, most pistol belts are not what I would call dress leather (though you can get them). My favourite is an old Milt Sparks that goes well with jeans, but I also have a Wilson Sharkskin and a Aratoonian that are not particularly dressy--most 1.5 inch belts are not. The only one I have that I wear with dress clothes is 1.25 inch Dillon.

As to getting to the car, when I want a handgun with me, but not me, I normally carry it in a Safepacker which conceals and camoflages it very well (and from which you can still draw quickly). If I want to carry a larger handgun with me (too big for my Safepacker--and a GP100 is), I just throw it in a small gray gym bar (a back pack works equally well) for the walk to the car. Another option for you would be the a backpack or tote specifically designed for concealed carry--they usually have quicker access and a built in holster/slot of some sort. Since you cannot carry legally, it would probably be better not to get a holster--if you ever get stopped and have it in holster on you, it might be considered carrying (even if you're in your car--laws can be flaky sometimes).

I thought about a backpack or something, but a pistol without a holster just seems wrong. It’s like having a rifle without a sling. If, God forbid, a situation should arise that calls for the use of a pistol, I would like to know I have a way to carry it with me easily.

Well, as I understand the new TX rule (assuming Perry signs it... and he better :p ) I am allowed to carry concealed in the car.

I was browsing around and found these Don Hume paddle holsters:

Has anybody had any experience with these holsters and the GP100 or similar size/weight gun?

Where can I find those?

A webbed type belt is probably what I need keep my pants from falling down under the weight of the handgun, but I still need a good holster that does not attach to my pants in any fashion that would make taking the holster and gun off an awkward or time consuming process. A traditional belt slide holster would, because I would have to redo my belt every time I went to take it off or put it back on...

I have a Don Hume leather paddle holster for my 4" S&W 586 and it also fits my GP100 perfectly. Retention is good and it is well made. But it still benefits from a good sturdy belt -- those guns aren't exactly light.

Galco has them. Kinda expensive. Try a Google search use web instructors belt, and you'll probably find less expensive belts.

Wallyworld ain't bad either...$10-15.00... :) Also wholesalehunter.com

Here's a link to what is probably the best:

Here's a link to the Safepacker (which can double as a belt holster) I talked about earlier (same company):

Just be careful about wearing/carrying without a license--conceal in the car may NOT mean concealed on you in the car (or it may take a court case to decide). You can end up in a world of hurt (whether you win or lose), and possibly even lose or delay your chance for a CHL when you turn 21. I don't know how your vehicle is set-up, but my Safepacker fits into either my door panel or between the seat and console (depending on which side I'm sitting) and is actually quicker to draw from than an IWB when seated and strapped in. I'm just afraid that with a holster you may find the temptation too great (or just plain forget).

I don't intend on wearing it in the holster in the car, I just think a handgun without a holster is not a good thing. I want to be able to grab my pistol, attach it to me real quick, and go if I have to. In the car I will have to figure something out. It does not come into effect until Sep. 1st, so I got time to figure it out...

Thanks for the links on the belt

According to my friends anyways... :D

The funny part is, my name isn't Bob... It would take a long time and many beers to fully explain how I ended up with it as a nickname.

Best bet is to find someone locally that does custom leather work, and has done holsters before. Usually mom and pop joints, saddle & tack and cobblers. Dennis has done many holsters over the 40 years he's been in business as a cobbler. Something I'm sort of picking up :p

From us/me, a fleshy side out(rough side out) or standard single layer holster would run around $40... technicalities are that no one I know has a GP100, and all the people I do holsters(never done a GP either..) for around here leave their pieces with me...
