Holster for 1911/Problem

Guys, I need some insight. I just got my Kimber the other day. So far, so good. No problems and I love it.

I said no problems, but I actually have one. I'm a cheapskate so I'm using a leather paddle holster that I used for my P220 and EAA Witness. It's adjustable for tension by tightening or loosening screws just below the trigger guard. It's a Vega sold by a gun dealer/range/training center here. It was expensive. And while it converted from the 220 to the Witness easily, I had to really crank down the screws to get my 1911 to fit the way I wanted it to.

NOW FOR THE PROBLEM. I wear this rig on my right hip, slightly to the rear. I've now noticed that while driving in my truck, my body is apparently pushing agains the leather and depressing the mag release button on my pistol. IRRITATING!!

Will a holster specifically designed for a 1911 eliminate this problem? I like the paddle holsters, that way it's easy to remove and leave locked up in my truck when I go in someplace where they aren't allowed. What holsters do you recommend that will fill this niche?

As always, THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
:D

For a really complete list of quality holsters, go to www.1911forum.com and look under their links section. There are a mess of websites.

While wearing holsters made for my 1911 (even a crappy nytek one) I haven't lost a mag yet.

Definitely get a proper holster. A holster that depresses your mag release COULD GET YOU KILLED! I've never had my mag release get pressed in any of my holsters.

I recommend custom holsters. Look, you've spent, what, $600+ on your gun? Spend $85 for a good custom holster or $55 for a kydex holster.

Don't bother with the factory made leather holsters, like Galco. I've got three holsters from Galco, which I no longer use. The problem is that they collapse upon drawing. This makes it harder to reholster, and can make you want to use your weak hand to hold open the holster while reholstering. That, of course, would put your fingers in front of a loaded barrel. Bad juju.

I've got a couple horsehide holsters from Rusty Sherrick, and three more on the way. I really, really like his work. And the prices and delivery time are quite reasonable. http://www.c-rusty.com

I've also got a holster from Milt Sparks that I like as well. His prices are higher and turnaround longer, but he makes good stuff. http://www.miltsparks.com

There are some darn good kydex holsters out there, and they are quite inexpensive. You can get a decent kydex holster for $55.

I've got one from Mad Dog Tactical which works well: http://www.mdenterprise.com

Blade Tech also has good kydex holsters: http://www.blade-tech.com

Some folks around here like Ky-Tac, but I don't have any experience with them: http://www.kytac.com/

Make sure you get a good gun belt while you're at it. Most belts sold at men's stores are too wimpy to properly support the holster.

Depends.

If you have one of the fancied up Kimbers with the extended safeties and the "slightly raised" magazine button, then holsters for a "regular" 1911 might give you some problems. If the cut of the holster is such that it covers (or comes up to) the mag release button and/or comes up high on the side of the pistol, then you might have a problem. I have a Fobus paddle holster that works just fine with a "fancied up" Kimber. Don't know about others.

Otherwise a good 1911 style holster should work just fine.

Check out the FOBUS paddle holster for the 1911. Under $20 most places. They work well, are easy to put on and take off, and are nearly industructible.

For a better option than a paddle holster try Lou Alessi's Close Quarter Covert with Snaps. The holster is detachable from the belt via the snaps and provides more stability than most paddle holsters do. It can be seen at http://www.rfholsters.com

Lou can be reached at:

Alessi Holsters, INC.

Tell 'em I sent ya. It won't give you any discount but Lou likes to know where his customers come from. Try his holsters, they are well made and he is a true gentleman.

Try the Safariland 518 or 5181. Both are paddle holsters made from Safarilaminate and are suede lined. They WILL NOT collapse after you draw the gun. The 518 has a thumb-break and the 5181 is open top. Both have tensioning devices. I use the 518 for my Kimber Custom Classic.
