Hollywood and Politics

Perhaps this has been brought up in one form or another here, but it's something that bugs me everytime there is a big event like the MMM , so I'll risk repetition in asking the question:
Everyone knows that Hollywood is a liberal town with all of the A list actors always getting their names and faces spread around for supporting some liberal function. My question is...where are the Hollywood conservatives? With the exception of a few regulars like Heston and Selleck, there seems to be no Conservative presence in Hollywood. This has always struck me as something of a contrived situation, because if you took a cross-section of almost any occupation, you would find a variety of political viewpoints. Hollywood's politics are so homogenized and skewed towards liberal agendas, it seems artificial.
What do the rest of you attribute this to?
-is it that the type of person drawn to acting tends to have a certain set of personality traits?
-is it that those in power over the years in Hollywood have advanced the careers of like-minded people, almost like a litmus test, so that ones political leanings are considered along with ones acting skills in furthering up-and-coming actors?
-is it that society as a whole has skewed so far to the left that those of us remaining on the right(and I don't see myself as particularly Conservative) are that much further on the fringe?
On the gun issue, it seems that there are especially few celebrity voices willing to speak up. There are a few B list actors who get their faces in the NRA publications for attending celebrity shoots, but in the debates we are suffering through on gun control, there are no celebs willing to speak out and put a human face on the sport and give it credibility.
Any thoughts from other posters?

Won't say that is an easy one, but, the A list people are scared some up and comer will steal their thunder should the unofficial "blacklist" be used. Too many big name studios and directors are anti's. Where will their prestige go if they are a has been? They will be on the outside looking in.
The B list really don't seem to care one way or the other. Most of them remember what our side is like.

Not all pro-RKBA folks are B list types. Rick Schroeder, while no major movie idol, is well known for hiw work on "NYPD Blue." Tom Selleck, who once in a while makes movie that do decently in terms of profit, is also pro-RKBA.

Why is Hollywood so liberal? Two guesses:

1. The myth of McCarthy, the Blacklist, and the Hollywood 10 has allowed those in the entertainment industry to view themselves as having had a history of oppression at the hands of the Right. An author by the name of Billingsley (SP?) wrote a great book called "Hollywood Party" about early Communist influences in Hollywood that helps explain alot.
2. Guilt. Though those in Hollywood do work hard, (being an actor is no piece of cake) they feel deep down inside that they don't do real work, like Joe Schmoe at the factory. They feel guilty so they embrace causes to "help" the poor.

There is also pressure to keep quiet, or else. Bo Derek was on some talk show last week speaking about just that very pressure.
She's a conservative, and was told that she wouldn't get a job in that town if she held those views. Ed Asner's been "blacklisted" as well, but I don't recall what the issue is or was.

Jane Fonda, on the other hand, gets an honorary degree from Emerson University.

Hemlock, that book, "Hollywood Party" was indeed quite informative. Paybacks continue over the blacklist period, although the effect of this blacklisting is way overblown.

Besides, history now shows (Venona decryptions, Soviet archives, etc...)that anyone that supported CPUSA damm well ought to have been blacklisted. CPUSA was up to their necks in espionage and funded by Moscow. As recent as 1988 Gus Hall was still receiving funding from them.

Monkeyleg, are you sure about Asner? He is a HUGE lefty. (I don't think he was involved in the blacklisting in the 50's.)

Regards

I believe that Ed Asner's problem has been that he has annoyed too many of the Hollywood elite by accusing them of being insufficiently radical in support of far Left causes.

You guys are right about Asner being a"lefty." In fact, he's so far to the Left he oughta have a hammer and sickle tattooed on his forehead.

Most of the people in Hollywood, "above the line," i.e. Actors, writers, directors and producers, studio heads, network heads, etc., are what I call, the Mega Millionaire Marxists and the Billionaire Bolsheviks. Those who don't have the big bucks yet, are the wannabees... but they all profess the Marxist ideology and intense hatred for the Constitution and the serfs and peasants in the hinterlands, who actually believe in Freedom, Rights and Liberty.

Also don't discount the fact that the american education system from the doctorate level down to kindergarten is controlled by Marxist Socialist professors, teaching assistants, and teachers. The Hollywoodites are very well brainwashed before the get to Hollywood. If they don't follow the party line, in the main, they don't work. Add in the pap dispensers in the news media, and you see why we "vermin" are so castigated and hated.

Bruce Willis is rumored to be very conservative. Well, maybe not very, but conservative. Arnold (the big guy)although married into the Kennedy clan, is also very conservative, and active in the Republican Party. Dwight Yoakum is a member of the Libertarian Party.

Forgot about Willis..yes, he is pro-gun, even came out in a recent interview in, I think, parade Magazine in support of guns. Maybe that was the real reason Demi couldn't stick with him...

There's no conspiracy there, just a lot of sick mental evolution that produces an atmosphere doubly conducive to virtual reality. What is more more artificial and requires more deceit and mental illness than the virtual reality of liberalism/socialism?

Liberalism/socialism draws flakes, maniacs, and other nut-fudge fringe types like, well, honey draws flies.

Life itself is an act to a lot of these folks. They live in a subjunctive universe of "what if" and "yes, but" so separated from reality that I'd argue that they're so shallow that they really don't know who they really are. Plastic people, if you will, the wax fruit in the display refrigerator at Montgomery Wards.

Of course, there are some exceptions: Denzel Washington, for example, is obviously a sane, solid family man who knows quite clearly where fantasy ends and reality begins. As to his stance on RKBA I don't know, but Hollywood would be much better off with more like him.

Don't forget John Milhas (sp) director of RED DAWN, THE WIND AND THE LION, ROUGH RIDERS and other films.
Linda Ellerbee of POLICE ACADAMY "fame".

Both pro gun for all. Linda has a few videos out on shotgun shooting. John used to tell of all the anti-gunners who were knocking on his door during the last round of riots in LA, wanting to borrow a firearm or 6 for the duration. He had to turn them down, laughing up his sleeve all the while.

I remember some years ago a statement Linda Rondstadt made concerning politics. This was at the time when she was dating then-Gov. of CA Jerry Brown (Clinton never inhaled, but Brown never exhaled.) She was being interviewed by some magazine or other, and was asked for her political opinion. She stated that she was an entertainer, not a politician, and it would be unfair of her to state her political views because her celebrity status would give those views more weight than the same views stated by a non-celebrity. Besides, she said, just because I'm a celeb doesn't mean my political views are more valid. She then pointed out that just because Jerry was a politician didn't mean his views on music were valid; apparently, he had horrible taste in music, according to her; he liked Muzak-style easy listening stuff.

Damn, we need a hell of a lot more like her. I had liked her before, but I REALLY respected her after that. An entertainer with a real brain.

Hollywood and government jobs, for the most part, tend to go to leftists. Jay Baker, I agree with you about the educational system. Try getting tenure at a University if you are not a Femminist/Marxist or the like. You will especially be weeded out if you are a Christian conservative. I think the melancholic temperament tends to concentrate in Hollywood and our Universities. They are the highly artistic, introverted, perfectionist, sensitive, and idealistic. They have a higher need to remove pain and hurt from society and apparently go for the quick fix (supposedly) of things like gun control rather than people control. They tend to believe that man is basically good and hope the best about their fellow man. So their solution is to remove the bad things in our environment that destroy and hurt.

I remember an article in National Review a few years back that attempted to answer the question. Seems that getting a job in Hollywood is based on an arbitrary system that is entirely dependent on others.
The actors are totally at the mercy of the "powers", so even though they may be rich, they subconciously see themselves as powerless. Hence, they spout the liberal line. Add to that the fact that few have any kind of educational credentials, and you get the "Feel not think" rubbish that gets spouted on talk shows, award shows and other forums.

Have you ever been to Hollywood? If you ever go there it will be much easier to understand. It is the land of the fruits and nuts.
It looks like Bruce Willis has come out in favor of gun owners.
