Hollow point slugs anyone???

I am testing out different slug loads for my 12ga Mav. 88 and ran across a hollow point slug made by Winchester. I was wondering it anyone has had any experience with these and their results.

They are a 1oz shot @ 1600fps and I am curious if they would have the same takedown power as say a slug 1oz slug at 1790fps that is not hollow point.

Also, for you slug users, please provide the slugs that you have had the most success with, so I can grab a box and see how my gun likes them!

Thanks.

I am a huge fan of the Federal "Tru-Ball" rifled slug. Designed for great accuracy in smoothbore barrels and shhot great in everything I try them in. I shoot mostly the reduced recoil version.

Remington

My 870 likes most Rem slugs. The core-lokt were pretty accurate and performed well on deer and hogs. I just sighted my 870 with the new Accutip. It grouped under 2" @ 75yds very easily and under 3" 125 yds. Probably the most accurate slug I've used. I have not tried on any game yet, .58 cal and ballistic tiplooks very lethal. Check out the video @ Remington.com. Go the ammo section and look up Accutip in shotguns slug part, awesome.

I keep Federal TruBall slugs around. As a bonus they don't cost an arm and a leg.

You didn't say what you plan to use slugs for but for most uses I think a hollowpoint slug is the way to go. When you'll want non-hollowpoint is for big dangerous critters like bear where penetration is critical.

You didn't specify that you're talking smoothbore here, but I'm assuming so based on the slug weights.

In that case my favorites based on accuracy and on game results:

1) Brenneke KO
2) Federal Truball
3) Federal Classic (not sure if these are even made anymore)
4) Remington Slugger

can't recall ever having bought or shot any winchester slugs.

All in 2 3/4".

I see no reason (around here anyway) to punish myself with 3" recoil.

Brenneke KOs have done well in every shotgun I've ever used them in. I use slugs in case I need either range or penetration, and Brennekes penetrate well. They're hard lead alloy solid body slugs with sharp shoulders that cut neat cookie cutter holes.

Most Foster type slugs are soft lead and flatten on impact- fine if that's what you want, but if you want serious penetration you need to look elsewhere.

Remington "Slugger" in my 870. Kills deers dead.

Had a rifled H&R 20gauge that shot like a laser with federal 3" sabots, wouldn't shoot straight with anything else.

My uncle shoots Copper Solids in his Ithaca 'deer slayer' with accuracy and effectiveness that borders on the deeds of Greek legends.

Dont worry about the velo as i have used several that shot at 1500........its all about bullet/slug construction and afterall its a shotgun not a rifle.

Rottweil Brennkeke Magnum Gold Slugs.

Creme de la creme. I've brought havoc to the wild boar population during hunting season. All dead shots.

On thin skinned medium game like deer and black bear, there's no ineffective 12 gauge slugs.

Current pet load is the KO Brenekke 1 oz. Shoots well in my two venison getters and Frankenstein.

One venison getter also likes Winchesters' HP rifled slug. I still have some from the state, it was my duty load.

A yearling shot center of shoulder broadside had such an eruption of matter coming out of the wound created by one of those my hunting bud was sure I was shooting some super secret LE load. The blood trail was about 2 feet wide and rather short.

Best approach, since each shotgun is a law unto itself is to buyamessa 5 packs and have at the bench. Use rifled slugs and Brenekkes in smoothbores, sabots (Pronounced SAH-BOH) in rifled barrels. In a rifled choke tube, test both. Mine likes rifled slugs.

HTH....

I'll add that I tried a box of Peters slugs once on a whim. Figured they were about the same as Remington Sluggers (Remington-Peters).

Blue hulls instead of green, slugs looked identical to sluggers, price was lower than Remington (reason I bought them).

Darn things shot all over the map. Don't know if I got a bad batch with varying powder charges or what, but they were the most inaccurate slugs I've ever run through a shotgun.
