Hogdon cornering the market ?

And you believe that Varget and H4350 will become unavailable because.....? If Hodgdon raises their prices do you believe that VV and Shooters World will not respond in kind?

.

Most powders today are really only manufactured in two places anyway. No reason for panic.

I am not saying anything is going away. Hogdon acquired Winchester and IMR and neither went away. But I quit depending on a go to powder because of times like these. Like I said my OP I have plenty of Varget and H4350 at the moment but just try and any in stock at the major suppliers. How about H4895 or any of half a dozen other popular powders. Just saying I like to have a backup and I am finding other powders which perform just as well if not better. Too bad there are not more primer manufacturers

Why? You should have xx or xxx pounds available of goto powder for times like these :) . I learned that from the last time around. That said, I've tested many powders, so if for some reason this lasts longer than 20 years or so, I will have something for a backup :) . Big thing in times like these is to get out and vote for a free America, not a socialist America. That'll get the powder back sooner.

Announcement:
Hodgdon Powder Company is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Ramshot and Accurate smokeless powder brands and the Blackhorn 209 muzzleloader brand from Western Powders. This acquisition is effective October 1, 2020, with the company set to immediately begin shipping these new products to wholesale and retail customers.

hounddawg,

If you are looking to an alternative powder to Varget, consider RL15. When I was shooting in 1,000 yard competition, I did quite a bit of load development/testing using Varget and RL15. I found RL15 to be slightly better than Varget in my .308.

Varget has been unavailable for close to a year already. Odd because it's also the most popular rifle powder in the US.
This is what happens when you turn the company over to the grand-kids.

Hodgdon is the correct spelling.
Western also distributed Norma powders in U.S.
Hodgdon extruded powders are mostly made by ADI (Australia). St.Marks (Florida) makes all U.S. ball powders, and is owned by General Dynamics, who also make some Accurate extruded powders in Canada.
I believe Alliant/former Hercules made materials for solid fuel rockets (the NASA kind).
IMR 4320 is a very similar alternative to Varget. Many Hodgdon branded powders are "evil twins" of like-named IMR powders.

Most of the Australian stuff is now made in Canada, hence recent suggestions to make sure you're following proper data and loadings.

The primer situation is dire if you aren’t stocked up, but I have been able to find the powders I need with a little looking. I bought H4350, Varget, RL26, and H4831sc all in the last month.

Primers are scarce, but searching outside your normal providers may prove beneficial. I picked up 12 lbs of powders and 15 bricks of small pistol, though 3 were magnum, and 2 match, but all will work for intended purposes. All in the past month and a half.

Cornering the market, hell I'd be happy if they would get off they're collective asses and start making H50BMG again!

One of the best and most popular powders and they stop making it! W.T.F?!

assuming the ADI plant is not shut down because of covid it's being made. Getting it shipped from to US from Australia is another thing altogether

out lovely EPA has made producing any sort of stick powder in USA damn near impossible due to its rules and regs

IMR 4320 has been made obsolete and is no longer part of the IMR line. ADI AR2208 (Varget in the U.S.) was originally developed to compete with IMR4064, specifically, but has even less sensitivity to charge weight in most .308 Loads.

My concern isn't with the elimination of powders but with the elimination on printed material.

I have printed Westerns pdf and keep a copy on my reloading bench. Also when on the forums and newbies ask to get started I direct them to this file to read for for free to get started.

What I really fear is this becoming another Bass Pro Shops/Cabela's outcome. Where Cabela's has lost all it's individuality.
