Yes SA..SOCOM 16..308 cal....I love this gun and have killed many hogs with it....I bought a green light and a low powered Burris scope..1 3/4 x 5....I mounted it very low..and then mounted the green light....

You know I love that setup... I am a big fan of the SOCOM cause I am a smaller guy, would love that smaller setup in a hard hitting, excellent rifle. That scope looks great, and I just had an idea, you could mount say a Trijicon RMR sight on an offset mount to the front, "scout" mount of the SOCOM , and have the main scope to shoot with an an awesome CQB option with the side mounted angled RMR... expensive but hey, it's an M1A.

Beautifiul lil awesome setup you got there.

You never told me how the green laser worked, LOL

Before I beg the wife for the dough, I need a person to vouch......

tAKticool...I wanted the scope close like a huntin rifle...not sure I'm gonna do anything else now...I want it light as possible....

Rick..just now rigging something up...This is a cheaper light....$75 at the gun show....I wanna try it before I spend more money....Dude says this is good for over 100 yds....We will see....

Oh, I got ya.

That's a cool rifle. The war on pigs needs something like that.

My hog light is a red spot light clipped to the scope. I converted it to use a 12v h3 motorcycle bulb. 12 volts worth of feeder batteries in the pocket of a tiger striped BDU top and Tada! Good for at least 200 yds and I can pick up eye-shine way way further than I can shoot.

Is the major benefit to scopes like that being able to mount it so close to the bore? And while I'm at it, how do you like that scope?

bpeezer..I like scopes mounted close on all my hunting rifles...It is harder to do on many military type rifles....Since much of my hunting is 200 yds or less..I like lower powered scopes....As far as Burris scopes..this is my first one to be put on a centerfire rifle....

Yep, 3-9 is too much at times, never go beyond 4x. 3-9 scopes are cheap and plentiful, that's the only reason I use them.

Keg - *drooool!* That is one tough looking .308 semi-auto! Wish I could have one of them for dealing with the feral pigs out western Queensland. That would be THE feral pig gun for me! :D

Sadly, thanks to one little turkey by the name of Howard in '96, I can't have a semi-auto. Unless you're a primary producer or a professional hunter. So, I had to be content with my Dad's good old Winchester '94 .30-30 Trapper, but finally, now I have my own "pig gun", a brand-new Marlin 1895 in .45-70! Oh, hang on, make that two, as I bought a lever-action 12 gauge shotgun from Chiappa, 5 rounds of 00 buckshot on tap. Ooo-rah! :D

That said though, I still have a soft spot for the M1As. It makes me want to leave this country and move to the States for good.

Keg - You have one as well? Nice! Since this Marlin is brand-new, I've been breaking it in, you know, fire one shot, then clean, repeat and so on, only got up to 14 rounds so far. I haven't had much to do with the .45-70, since I've reloaded for the .30 cals mostly. I have bought a box of Federal 300 grain semi-jacketed, which I'm using at the moment.

Do you reload your own .45/70 ammo or prefer to use factory ammo for hunting? Just asking, because buying factory ammo is a bit on the steep side ($60 AU per a box of 20 rounds) and I have the gear to reload the .45/70. My Dad is a bit skeptical about reloading for hunting, he thinks it's a waste of time as his previous efforts at reloading hunting ammo for the .30/30 didn't work very well.

Bluey..most factory loads are on the light side..unless U get Buffalo Bore..etc....I have been getting ammo from a fella that loads hotter than factory loads...flat nose solids..350 grn....

A hard cast .45-70 is just about perfect in my limited hog hunting experience. An older relative used to hunt them for some of the farmers near him, but doesn't see so well anymore. I've sat with him a few times over the last couple of years to hunt hogs and deer. I've never really had the urge to hunt much on my own, but I don't mind being his trigger man.

Last couple of trips, I brought some of my handloads with 405gr cast bullets. They leave a .458" hole going in one side and out the other and seem to not mess up the meat as much as an expanding bullet. My first trip with him I brought a .30-30 with soft points. It worked just fine but seemed to make more of a mess of things.

TriumphGuy..hunting hogs is different for many here than anything else....It is war....If I see one hog..I shoot it....If I see 10 hogs..I try to kill all 10....I care nothing about wasted meat..all I want is to do is kill as many as I can....Yes I get some meat too..but that is not the main objective....Being spring and all..the hogs are on the move and desroying pastures and hay meadows....The ground is soft from the rain and they are out in force....Mostly at night tho....

They also injure and pass diseases on to livestock, destroy fences, water gaps and the dreaded rip open round bales. A family of pigs can eat a day or more worth of hay in one night.

They are simply vermin, overgrown rats.

There is are not many illegal methods to kill them.

Sportsmen generally arent interested in hunting them once the cooler is full.

While hunting them is fun, its not always convenient. Sometimes you have to go out on a week night when you have to go to work in the am. Or go get some out of a trap after a 12-13 hour day.

Back to the subject at hand, just about any center fire rifle .223 or above will work on them, with .30 calibers being optimal. I prefer no exits with cows around so I choose .223. If I didn't have those concerns I would select a rifle just like Keg's.

Keg, very nice setup! What kinda mount is that?

I've mainly used a plain 'ol SKS on hogs, haven't been in a while though but looking to get out soon.
