Hey.
Been wanting to hunt for a while. Finally getting the chance.
Been hog hunting 1 time.. with no luck.. I am about 100pcnt
Sure it was that some of our crew didn't remove smell..
And puffed a few smokes before heading out...

I am going with just my son this time fairly well prepaired..
I think...

I have read lots about cleaning and field dressing...
1 highly important fact is keeping meet cool.. and doing it quick..
Any tips would be great.. also.. in dressing.
We will be camping. About 3 to 4 hours from home..
No hose to wash meat after cleaning or anything...
If we get a pig can we keep it on ice saturday and sunday, or
Is it best to call it a weekend ... go home wash it down.. and put it in the freezer..

I am new to this... so any tips would be great..

Thanks in advanced.

For field dressing, if you are going to need some time before butchering... Gut the hog and pack the gut cavity with bagged ice... This will buy you a little time...

As for cooler, you want to have bigger than you think you will need...

You can cover the meat with ice and keep it topped up every day draining the bloody water... This can be done for a full week at least...

If you do kill one, don't try to ice the whole thing down. As soon as it is killed hang it, skin it, cut the shoulders and hams into quarters and put the carcass trimmings/loins/backstraps into ziplock bags and chill those. Doing that, you can get several hogs easily into a 48qt cooler.

And I debone mine

I debone mine too, but I do that on the kitchen counter using the previously quartered pieces. It is normally too hot here to try and do deboning outside except what trim pieces I pull off the carcass while it's hanging.

Ive been hunting hogs since I was old enough to walk and all we do is gut it as soon as possible and if its a boar cut the testicles off asap (makes them taste better.) If there is going to be some time before you get a chance to skin it (sooner the better) pack it full of bagged ice. If you do get one, quarter it an put it in a cooler then pack it down with ice. I leave my pigs in a cooler full of ice water and about 4 ounces of vinegar for 2-3 days and it actually helps pull the gaminess out. Take yourself plenty of water to rinse the meat with. You may want to bring a bottle of Coca cola for yourself. Pour it on your hands and it will pull the blood off just like soap then rinse with water. Oh, just so you know the hide on a hog is fairly tough so a good sharp knife is needy and a sharpening stone is always handy haha. Good luck to ya! Where abouts are you hunting?

thanks all

Rebel. We are in south alabama.
I posted a new thread where. That way others who go can follow the places
Not so fruitful.. and look else where. Save time..
If ur close march 1-6 they have a whole week for hogs. I thought it was this weekend.
But realized it was next weekend. I can't go nut for those who do..
Best of luck... lots of turky spots along 718 track..
Happy hunting
