Hog Hunting in Mississippi

I just moved to Mississippi and am interested in doing some hog hunting.

I understand that many of the WMA's in the state have hogs but I am unclear on the regulations for doing so. I am interested in hunting the pearl river WMA as it is 15 miles form my house. A search of the internet offered me no clarification on the dates hog hunting is allowed and the weapons allowed for doing so.

I have read some places that you can only use primitive weapons during the deer season for taking hogs and that during non deer season you can only use small game weapons.

Can anyone give me some clarification or maybe some information about other places to look for hog hunts near central and western MS(leases, etc..)

I read through that site which is what prompted my questions.

The nuisance animal regulation states as follows:

From opening of deer archery season to the last
day of February: (private lands and open public
lands that have statewide seasons without special
regulations) Nuisance animals may be hunted,
taken, killed or pursued during daylight hours with
weapons legal to use for the hunting season open at
the time. Persons hunting nuisance animals from ½
hour after sunset until ½ hour before sunrise with or
without the aid of a light, are restricted to using
standard rim fire rifles or handguns no larger than
.22 caliber (all magnums are excluded) and/or
shotguns with shot size no larger than No. 6 shot.
Persons hunting nuisance animals with archery
equipment and/or with primitive weapons during
archery or primitive weapons season must possess
either a Sportsman License or an Archery/Primitive
Weapon License in addition to an All-Game License.

And

From March 1 to the day prior to the opening of
deer archery season: Nuisance animals may be
taken, killed, chased, or pursued on private lands at
any time with no weapon restrictions and/or on
public lands where the government agency charged
with the management of said lands has passed laws
or regulations allowing the taking of nuisance
animals. However, nuisance animals may not be
hunted or pursued with dogs during spring turkey
season. Crossbows may be used to take nuisance
animals by persons possessing either a General
Crossbow License or Special Crossbow License in
addition to an All-Game or Sportsman License.

Are WMA's considered "open public lands that have statewide seasons without special regulations" or is hog hunting closed on the WMA during deer season.

Also I can find nothing for the pearl river WMA that specifically address nuisance animal hunting other than that running dogs on hogs is authorized from 1 to 28 February.

The General WMA regulation says that hogs may be taken during any open season on a WMA with weapons legal for that season. So since the pearl river WMA is primitive weapons only for deer does that mean during deer season only primitive weapons are allowed for hogs?

What about durring the small game seasons?

Am I over thinking this?

What about other public lands for hog hunting? National Forests, Corps of Engineers?

Maybe I am over thinking this but these regulations confuse me. Maybe I'll just have to call

There's a bunch of phone numbers on the MDWF website, give them a call, I'm sure that they can answer your questions. Also the only Pearl River WMA that I know of close to you is in Louisiana. To hunt it you would have to have out of state license, WMA permit, etc. a lot of trouble just to hunt hogs. The area where you live and south of it is loaded with wild hogs, it shouldn't be to hard to find where you can hunt them. Anywhere along the Pearl River in the marsh areas are absolutely loaded with hogs. Almost anywhere south of US 90 is good hog hunting. Best area is from the Louisiana/Mississippi state line to Bay Saint Louis.

gun choice

You can hunt them with whatever gun is legal to carry.
muzzleloader in primitive weapon.
Bow in bow season.
rifle in gun season.
shotgun on some state lands.
this is to keep you from deer hunting ans "saying" you are hog hunting.
