Hog hunt Strategy

i am going to a friends place in eastern NC where he has some wild hogs. i am wondering how i should go about hunting them. Like as far as should i look for them in creek bottoms, or in open areas, or oak flats or whatever. Im thinking of maybe putting some corn out and putting my climber up over it.

It is all about the sign... rooting that is fresh... the scent of a rank boar, but stalk and spot is a tough hunt for hogs. I personally have seen only a few free roaming hogs. Most of them were within a hundred yards of sour corn. The bottoms and thickest uncomfortable thickets are likely spots... They just seem to lay low.

Corn is not a bad idea. I'd wear rubber boots and spread a thin trail across any areas that show signs.

If you are going to be able to prep the area a week or so before the hunt you can bury the corn with a little diesel over the top or put the corn in a large capped pvc pipe with a couple dime sized openings and use a dog chain corkscrew anchor to keep it in place.

We are so overwhelmed with feral hogs that we don't need bait usually.

Hogs tend to go out grazing at night on crops, or root around in open fields. They then tend to make their way back just before sunrise to the safety of thick bush that has to be near water. You could try looking for fresh tracks, diggings & **** by their watering hole & try to figure which way they are travelling to their feeding/rooting place & wait in ambush at sunrise or sunset.Otherwise, walk the creek beds in the heat of the day- they have to be near.

i like to hunt along water in the heat of the day. i can usually hear hogs in a wallow before i can see them. keep the wind in your face and move as slow and as quitely as you can. if you are on the trail be prepared to step off if you see one coming that you don't want. i have found hogs don't care for their buddies. on one occassion i allowed a large boar to pass by at gun barrel length, because i wanted one of the smaller pigs. as the boar got the wind on me he bristled and broke into a run. the only noise was him crashing brush as he ran off. a 40 pounder came up the trail next, obliviously.

if you use bait put it out a little ways from your stand site. put some in the shadowed area that you can see into during daylight, and make a trail to an area in direct sun light. that way as the sun drops you will have more shooting time.
i used to hunt during the night over a rusted out garbage can, which i placed on a graveled area. i sat in my blind about 50 yards off. when i heard my can being moved around i turned on my Qbeam. i also used a coke bottle with corn in the bottle. the glass was easy to hear, when being rolled around on the rocks.
I always wanted to invent a feeder rigged with a light on a rehostat and a motion detector, so when motion at the feeder was detected the red light would power up ever so slowly, so as not to frighten a hog. i would have called it the outlaw and made some money.
