Hmmm, what to CC?

KGP-141 or Colt Detective special, what is a better gun to CC?

Both have 6 shots, nice.
It is hot as hades where I live and the gun will get a good drenching of sweat on a daily basis (I run a BBQ operation in 95 degree weather). I think this gives the stainless Ruger a plus due to corrosion due to sweat. The Colt is smaller and lighter and more comfortable as a belly gun under my apron.
I am probably going to carry in ThunderWear

other guns that I have handy that could be options:
beretta 92
Glock 17
Rossi M720 in .44spl 2" barrel I think (stainless)
Walther PPK .380/9mm Kurtz
a bunch of asst Taurus poop in .357 and .38spl

Advice?

Opinion:

Start with the GP. You will satisfy your curiosity and quickly determine that you want something smaller and lighter. Same goes for the Beretta, though it is less lumpy, therefore likely to be a little more comfortable.

I am fond of bigger bullets, especially if they will be "velocity challenged" as fired from short barrels. The Rossi, then is worth a thought. However, remember that stainless metal CAN and WILL corrode if left in a suitable condition long enough. And stainless tends to pit when it does.

The Glock, with its plastic parts and the finish they put on the metal slide is likely to be most comfortable and a good compromise for corrosion resistance. (Keep in mind that I am not fond of Glock's action type.)

I imagine the Walther would be the most comfortable to wear all day while you work. If your threat level is not high, the cartridge should be adequate and if you shield the gun from sweat by putting a waterproof barrier between the Thunderwear and your body it may be OK. Of course, there are other ways to carry. How about clipping an extra oven mitt to your belt with a holster stitched inside- maybe about wrist level?

Sincerely,

Lost Sheep.

Opinion also --

(and worth every damned dime you paid for it, too, by god)

I also am not a Glock fan, but given the conditions you describe the Glock is one of your more optimal choices available.

It won't be particularly bothered by the sweat and the moisture; it is at least as easy to carry as any of the other options in any real-world conditions (beneath your apron, thunderwear, etc.); and it offers you more than 6 rounds without a reload.

In fact, given that you are a civilian not expecting to deal with Armageddon at the BBQ shop, you may decide to forego the reload magazine altogether.

If you have a problem that 17 rounds of 9mm won't resolve, it might be time to opt for Plan B.

Given your other options and your circumstances, thats my humble opinion.

That + $4 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks ;)

I'm not a Glock fan either but a lot of Police Departments issue them. There is a lot to be said about tupperware frames and sweat so I'm with doc on this one..

I think LostSheep was onto to something great. As a fellow food service worker I really think that the apron is a tool of awesome value. So, why not use it to your advantage?

The first thing that comes to mind is the SMART CARRY. It seems like that would sit great even outside the pants as long as you had the apron on.

I know the Thunderwear sound enticing but it also sounds like you are gonna be doing alot of extra work to keep from destroying your gun.

I would personally be looking into some kind of IWB and a smaller gun, but I understand you're working with what you have/like/trust.

Great. I think I will try the Rossi and the Glock a day each and see what I like better, I have never CC'ed either of those guns ever before. Next time I am in the states I am going to do some serious holster shopping. You are right about the apron being a valuable tool in concelment, and the extra mitt with a piece in it, very interesting.
I will see how this works out. Thanks for the advice and help.

Another lil question, so I can pick one up next time I am in civilization, what kind of IWB holster would be best for CC with the Rossi?

I, too would choose either the Glock or the Rossi 720.
The Rossi is 3 inch barrel (the one that I shoot, is anyway).
Both can handle you heat and humidity. You get lots of
firepower with the Glock and nice, B I G holes with the .44.:D

I'm a huge fan of the 3" SA XD's. I think they have one in .45. Mine's in 9mm, and I liked it so much that I bought a SA XD(m) 9. Which, btw, I like even more. Although, the one gun I've been trying to get my hands on for a few years ( whenever I see one, I don't have the cash, and when I have the cash, I never see one ) Is the Coonan 357 cadet model. 3.5" semi auto pistol, firing the .357 magnum. 6 shot as i recall. I've shot the 5" and I loved it. Recoil is a bit stiff though. I'm an auto snob, so i never really got into wheelguns, but I really like the .357 and .327 magnums. I jumped at the chance of owning a 1911 style .357 that's not the size of a small howitzer....cough.....desert eagle....cough. My opinion.

From your post I can't be sure if you already have the Detective Special or are contemplating buying one. If you are "in the market", I would suggest looking for a Colt Cobra instead-same as the Detective Special except lighter and less susceptible to rust.

not that this is entirely helpful, my cc choices id pick are:
PX4 Sub Compact
CZ Rami
SIG 239
and if none of those were available
Glock 26

Well, with 6 real guns along with assorted "Taurus poop" (I like that one:D), it doesn't sound like you're financially challenged. Perhaps wise enough to take care of and enjoy what you do have, but not hurting for cash.

I'd say carry the PPK in your pocket.

If it's blued, give it a good wax with an automotive wax product. A buddy of mine does that to his PPK and he's still got it looking brand new after 25+ years of ownership. Of course he doesn't carry all the time and certainly doesn't sweat all over it.

But, if you wax it once a month it will last a long time, and it's small and light enough that it isn't in the way. If it lasts for 5-10 years in that type of environment then you can send it off for re-bluing or you can buy a new one.

I got totally bummed, trying to find an IWB holster for my Glocks, so I fashioned my own, using car carpeting. I sewed a loop of nylon mesh to the holster for a belt loop. The gun stays where I want it, but you have to open your pants to put the gun back in, if you draw it. Since you're wearing an apron, it would be a simple matter to make a similar holster for your 17 that would simply go in a front pants pocket. Use a belt loop to keep the gun from turning in the pocket.

Dgludwig, I already have the Colt DS
Regular Joe, good idea, my sewing skills are for crap but sounds like a good idea. I ordered a CompTac IWB for the 17 but they sent me a lefty and that is no good. Waiting on replacement, they said they never received my returned holster. I will give them a chance to make good before I slam them on the internet.

Sounds like a cellpall holster would be a good option to check out. It can be used with any of the weapons that you listed and quite a few others.
