I'm just curious....There are a lot of very open fields just to the west of me.

If I were to find one with a good natural backstop, what kind of penalties are there if I'm caught target shooting a small caliber rifle on someone else's field?

I you have that someone else's permission and determine that you're not within the limits of city that prohibits such activity, then you don't have to worry about penalties. Without being certain of those two things, I wouldn't even attempt to do what you're suggesting, nor even consider it.

thats what I thought

That's what I thought. I wonder what the odds are of someone who doesn't know me allowing me to target shoot on their land. I thought about offering a farmer $20 per visit, or a 12 pack of beer, or whatever....lol

Offering an incentive might help persuade someone, particularly if you promise (and keep that promise) to clean up after yourself. It's very rarely a good idea to do anything you know is illegal or think might be illegal, particularly when firearms are involved.

yep

yep, I agree. I wouldn't leave a trace. I'm just suspecting most won't allow me because they are worried about liability issues....which I couldn't blame them.

Offer to help out with whatever you can for an hour or so after your target practice...mending fences,cleaning stalls,feeding animals or whatever else

It depends on how you're caught. Some people don't care. But you're gonna have to be respectful if caught. Nothing pisses off a farmer like some know-it-all city boy shooting stuff in his field.

Ohio Revised Code
» Title [29] XXIX CRIMES - PROCEDURE
» Chapter 2911: ROBBERY, BURGLARY, TRESPASS AND SAFECRACKING

2911.21 Criminal trespass.

(A) No person, without privilege to do so, shall do any of the following:

(1) Knowingly enter or remain on the land or premises of another;

(2) Knowingly enter or remain on the land or premises of another, the use of which is lawfully restricted to certain persons, purposes, modes, or hours, when the offender knows the offender is in violation of any such restriction or is reckless in that regard;

(3) Recklessly enter or remain on the land or premises of another, as to which notice against unauthorized access or presence is given by actual communication to the offender, or in a manner prescribed by law, or by posting in a manner reasonably calculated to come to the attention of potential intruders, or by fencing or other enclosure manifestly designed to restrict access;

(4) Being on the land or premises of another, negligently fail or refuse to leave upon being notified by signage posted in a conspicuous place or otherwise being notified to do so by the owner or occupant, or the agent or servant of either.

(B) It is no defense to a charge under this section that the land or premises involved was owned, controlled, or in custody of a public agency.

(C) It is no defense to a charge under this section that the offender was authorized to enter or remain on the land or premises involved, when such authorization was secured by deception.

(D)(1) Whoever violates this section is guilty of criminal trespass, a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.
A penalty of a $250 fine and 30 days in jail may be imposed if convicted.

Offer to help out with whatever you can for an hour or so after your target practice...mending fences,cleaning stalls,feeding animals or whatever else

That will get you further than 20 bucks or some beer - but offer your labor BEFORE, and even several times before you shoot - build the rapport, trust and friendship FIRST, then ask for the favor

Being VERY polite and not sounding like the current youth of today will go even further (try not to use the word "like" 600 times in a sentence, and add Sir and Ma'am to your vocabulary if you haven't already done so)

I don't know about Ohio laws; but here criminal trespass while in possession of a firearm is a much more serious crime than "normal" criminal trespass. Something else to consider as possession of a firearm while committing an otherwise minor crime can sometimes lead to serious/felony charges.

Seems to me we are asking about doing something that we know is apriori to be wrong and probably illegal to some degree.

Doesn't reflect well on gun ownership.

Don't do it.
