HK USP without safety

Ok, in the recent issue of Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement, they had an article about the .40 H&K USP. It DID NOT have a safety...and they mentioned something called the LEM (Law Enforcement Modification). Is that what the mod does? If so, how do you decock the gun? And where can you get a USP without a safety? If they have made a USP with no safety, their sales are about to sky rocket dramaticly, as I know many individuals who love the USP but hate it for that safety.

:D

The way I understand it is that the LEM is LEO. I thought the article talked about how the LEM worked but I do not recall the details.

I forgot to mention- scroll to the bottom to see a description of all varients.

Another note: the USP series can be converted to any of the 9 varients if you change your preference.

Actually the LEM is a modified system that mimicks a striker fired weapon. When the slide is racked it partially tensions the hammer resulting in a lighter DAO pull than the traditional DAO pull. The pull is said to have been in the neighborhood of appro. 5-6lbs. After firing the hammer returns to the forward position.

A few of these were available for civilian sales from cal's sporting armory. they included 3-10rd mags and nite sites. I think that the price was under $600.

I am in the process right now of having mine (Tactical) converted to variant 7. I want it to work similar to a Glock.

I have already done this...

Not the LEO DAO half-cock thig, but the safetyless USP.

The parts and instalation are availible through any authorized H&K armorer (your local gun smith is most likely one...), and many other gun stores can order the parts.

Price: $50+instal (H&K will install for free if you do it through them, but you have to give up your gun for weeks)
Function: converts the safety/decocker into a safety only. The lever no longer moves up.
Looks: identical without the safety graphic
Notes: You can easily install this yourself if you are comfortable RnRing the hammer assembly.

Hope this helps!

J.T.King,

I was unaware H&K would send out the parts to do a variant conversion. Have you bought them before at a local dealer?

We had an H&K rep in town at the local shop about three months ago. I asked him about the cost for a variant change and he said it would cost $25 plus shipping to H&K. Are you saying H&K will do the switcheroo for free if you send them the gun?

I've got a chance to buy a NIB Variant 3 full sized 9mm stainless for a very good price. I might consider doing a variant change depending on cost, and how I like it as is. It will mainly be a fun gun for me, but I do prefer variant 1.

Thanks for any info you might have.

LEM

Externally, it looks like Variant 7 -- Double Action Only with no control lever.

However, unlike Variant 7, it has a short reset. The overall pull is also reportedly much lighter than the normal USP DA pull. The light pull and short reset gets compared to the Glock trigger a lot, but it seems to work more like Para-Ordnance's LDA.

The change is basically a separate pre-cocked piece in the hammer assembly. The external hammer works like a DAO, but the internal pre-cocked piece provides the spring tension to drive the hammer forward. When this internal piece is uncocked (during dry-fire, for instance), the DA pull is reportedly horrendously heavy.

It is currently offered only on certain USP 40c as part of a contract with the INS. An HK rep told me they do intend to make it available as a retrofit someday. I'm not an HK insider or anything, I just wanted an LEM in my 45C and I kept bugging 'em until I got an answer. :)

I was told when I bought my parts that I could send it to HK for $50 and they would do the swap for free, or I could buy the parts from a local HK armorer and either pay them or do it myself.

Yes. I did buy my parts at a local dealer. I have two dealers there that can buy the parts, but only one who is an HK armorer. My understanding is, if the HK armorer puts them in and something goes south, you can send it to HK and they will fix it for free. If you do it yourself or have the non-HK armorer gun shop put them in, you foot the bill if its screwey.

That being said... If you have taken your hammer assembly apart before (there is only a loose pin holding it all together) then this is an EASY swap to DIY. If you arent comfoprtable, find an HK armorer and pay him the $25 like I did the first time. Remember to request your original parts back so you can swap it out later.

Now, the parts I got were for the right-handed, no safety version. Still has the decocker. that $50 was retail, so I have no idea if that price quoted you by HK was wholesale, could be. Since I paid to have mine installed (before I took apart the hammer assembly), I paid $50+tax +$25 install.

Hope this helps!

Hey J.T.,

Thanks for the info. It does help a lot.

the impression I got from th H&K rep was that they charged $25 total for the conversion. The reason I asked you was because when I asked him he gave me one of those "Uhhh. . . I think its something like $25".

I guess the thing to do is call them and ask if there are any armorers in the area.

Oh the infamous H&K USP 40c with the LEM trigger. The above description is fairly accurate, in that it is a pre-cocked DAO w/fairly short seer reset. The pistol was designed to be a private purchase side arm for INS agents. It is actually a good concept in that the pull is around 6.5 lbs and consistant from shot to shot. I have had mine for about 2 weeks and while I haven't put actual rounds throough it I have dryfired the pistol a lot. The comparison to the LDA, Glock and Kahr will exist but isn't quite right, it different enough to stand alone. They are available to civilians through the following dealers and are possibly one of H&K's best buys... Stay Safe

PS: I bought mine from John at McDonald Tactical and he was very good to deal with...
