HK USP Recoil Spring

I have a new HK USP Compact .40 that seems to be sensitive to wimpy commercial ammo. It functions great with all the usual ammo (S&B, CCI, etc.) however it short cycles and stovepipes American Ammunition 180gr copper plated ammo. The same ammo is fine in my P239 and my son's Beretta and Kahr. It's obvious from the recoil that the American cheapos are not as hot as other commercial ammo I've tried. Is this a common problem with the USP? Is changing to a lighter recoil spring a viable option? Does anyone know of a source for lighter springs?

Is there any reason you can't avoid "wimpy" commercial ammo? I have a USP .40 that eats everything I've put through it (choked on an out of spec PMC round that wouldn't cycle in any other .40 I tried it in).

I haven't had any problems with any of the other "range" type ammo.

I wouldn't change out the spring. If you go to a lighter spring an then shoot regular ammo you will be unecessarily accelerating wear on the firearm (unless you changed springs before switching ammo, which I wouldn't want to deal with).

I've really never had this problem with any of my USPs. I think I'd use another brand of ammo. Also, if it is new, you may see the problem go away as the spring gets "broken in".

Good luck and enjoy. I enjoy my USPs more than any of my other handguns.
