HK USP Question

I know that the HK USP .45 Full size can handle +P and +P+ loads. It is my understanding that the UPS Tactical and Expert are based on the same platform. Bearing this in mind it would seem logical that the Tactical and Expert should also be able to handle the +P and +P+ loads.

Can anyone verify or disprove this? I can find no text that specifically references any HK weapon except the USP .45 Full size in this regard.

Kirk:

A few mos back, I spoke w/ an HK factory rep who told me that both models would handle these loads.

For your own peace of mind, you might want to contact HK directly at:

The entire line of HK USP pistols, be it .45, .40, and 9mm can handle all commercial loads including +P. Of course, if you do so you'll increase wear and tear and decrease lifespan. Plan on replacing the recoil spring and buffer more often, such as every 2,000 rounds or so.

I might also mention that with the .45, using +P is considered by many to be a wasted endeavor. The best loads in this caliber are all standard velocity loads, such as the 230gr. Federal Hydra-Shok and Remington Golden Saber.

Really ? I'm surprised to see you say that.

I have a total of about 11,000 rounds through one of my USP .45 compacts, 2000 of which were Federal Hydra Shok 185 +P, 200 of which are Pro Load 200 +P, and 120 rounds of Pro Load 230 +P.

Half of the remainder are 230 grain Federal American Eagle, with lots of S&B and hot Euro Fiocchi along with some Speer Lawman and CCI Blazer (medium hot) in the mix.

My recoil buffer looks fine, just a tiny bit of "skirting" and no obvious wear. The pistol functions 100% reliably. Did a detail strip last night and there's no obvious wear on any surfaces in the hammer and trigger subassembly components when compared to a detail strip of my newer USPc with less than 1000 rounds through it.

Frame looks exactly the same as after the first 3000 rounds, but the frame feels a little smoother than the newer pistol (stippling and diamond checkering has probably worn down a little bit).

Barrel and locking lugs look new, top surface of the locking block has slight wear, as do the nose corners of the slide from holstering.

Also, HK Sterling told me to expect at least 10,000 more rounds before replacement of the bufer and/or recoil assembly given the present condition of the pistol. Given what I have seen of rental range USP's, I have no reason not to believe that- yet.

Sect 4, pg, 21 of owner's manual "All USP pistols areapproved for use w/ +P and +P+ ammunition. The use of +P and +P+ ammunition does accelerate wear and reduce the service life on the component parts of any pistol, including the HK USP."

I have seen and shot rental range USP's in three places, the Beverly Hills Gun Club in Santa Monica in 1995 (now closed), the Pro Arms shop range in Salt Lake City in 1997 (also closed) and a range in San Diego, the name of which escapes me, but it is on Moraga Drive, not far from Sea World.

Of these, the one at Pro Arms (.45) was the most abused, having had the locking block top polished bright by wear and being completely filled with firing residue. It still always went "bang" though. I don't think that pistol had been cleaned or seen a drop of lube in 20,000 rounds.

There are also USP rentals available at what was a decent gun shop, Custom Arms in Salt Lake City, but...

CAUTION: OFFTOPIC RANT FOLLOWS

...now that shop has been purchased recently by the evil troll Dell Schanze (totally awesome computers moron for those of you in SLC), and I will have nothing to do with them, nor will they see a dime of my money :barf:

Archer1440,

Hey, a fellow SuperDell hater. I really feel at home here now.

The guy is downright obnoxious is he not?

That being said, I have to relate a story about him. . . One of my co-workers was at one of the newer movie theaters to see Blackhawk Down. She said before the movie started none other than SuperDell himself stood up and told everyone there that the guy seated by him was one of the military personnel that was involved in the whole Somalia mission (friend didn't catch his name). Went on for a few minutes with some patriotic speech about supporting the troops etc., then sat down.

I can't stand the guy's voice or his commercials, but I'm down with him being patriotic, and I'm down with him being a "gun guy" (although he doesn't come off as being a great spokesperson for the 2nd). I once saw one of his delivery trucks in SLC with his big logo on it. Underneath at the bottom of the truck box in four inch letters was the phrase "Glock, Glock, know what I mean?". I guess it was a hint to potential criminals (computer thieves) that a Glock would be used in protection of the driver??

OK, I'll bite

I know this SuperDell is associated with Totally Awesome Computers in SLC. That is the extent of my knowledge. Can someone let me in on why he is so reviled and hated?

Kirk

Well, it's off topic, and I would hate to incur the wrath of Tamara, but suffice it to say that he has:

-Questionable business practices
-The man is a jackass
-He has been known to personally attack people in his ads
-Did I mention he's a jackass ?
-His pro CCW ads make us look like raving lunatics packin' heat
-His commercials are deliberately ultra-annoying, and SuperDell himself, on a personal level, is a jackass.

With all that said, I hear you Shake. I think of his advocacy in the same vein as that of Ted Nugent... sometimes it's better NOT to have a prominent spokesman for one's POV, but in the long run we'r probably better off with them than without..

(Come to think of it, I was hanging out with Nugent this past weekend in Nashville, and his 10MM Glock pistol was printing, bigtime, through his leather jacket. So were the multiple mags he carries on the support side. But, at least Ted's not a jackass...)

KMKeller,

I think for the most part people think him to be one of the most annoying persons on planet earth. He runs radio ads all the time with terribly annoying talk about his personal life, etc.

Archer,

I can't really say anything about his business practices because I've never bought from him. I agree with a lot of what you say.
