HK USP 9 - All at once!

Well, after some soul searching this year. I've decided to actually jump fully into Heckler and Koch.

History:

February happened. One of my guns, a SIG P229 had some sort of defect. Either from the factory or from the previous owner (leaning towards factory). The date of manufacture was 2010. I have been shooting SIG Sauer classic P series for about a decade. P226, 229, 220... So after I made a decision to drop SIG Sauer from my defensive pistols for failure to work with me on my defective P229, I picked up Glock again. I tried and "felt" a few others and just couldn't commit. DA / SA is my favorite platform. I looked at another P229 Elite Dark, date of manufacture in 2012. Inspected it prior and it didn't have the issues my older one had.

Put the customer service issue aside with the company and purchased it. So, since I carry the gun for self defense and I don't carry around the CS experience to defend myself. I went back to the exact same gun, but not defective. Been carrying it since. 10 years of running these guns, you just get used to it. Haven't had anything pique my interest to start all over again, magazines, holsters, range time, range time, range time..

That is until I had an intermission this year with the HK USP 45 and USP 45 Compact. They were so smooth and built like tanks. I had the honor of speaking to someone people in the industry on the phone and through a series of emails about HK, and he further sold me.

I dove into it all the way.

Purchase an HK USP 9 along with the following, to which this HK expert recommended. Not that it *needs* it, but it'll definitely be enhanced after this.

  • The HK Match Trigger Kit
  • Firing Pin Block Spring - Light
  • GG&G rail adapter (During our talks, I mentioned how I need a weapon mounted light on it. That's how I carry most of my guns.)
  • 2 x magazines. For a total of 4 magazines when it gets here. More to come gradually later on.
  • Trijicon Bright and Tough night sights.

The GG&G rail is going to a custom kydex manufacturer. I'm getting one holster with the rail and the X300U and one holster with the GG&G rail alone.

Since I have not worked on HK as much as I've worked on P-Series SIGs and Glocks. I'll be sending it all to get installed, with a one day turn-around time.

The HK should get to my FFL tomorrow.

Hopefully by February of next year, I can take the class offered by said HK experts.

Finally, an investment that's worth it. We'll see how this goes and it'll give the SIG a break from the sweat. We all know they don't like sweat.

Anyways! Just thought I'd share!

Fair enough, though I'd argue if you've done work on a SIG P series the HK USP is, IMO, relatively easy to work on.

Mind if I ask to whom you're referring?

Cool, thanks for the link!

Yea the sight tool helps. I bought a MGW tool for HKs a number of years back now. I only use it maybe once a year, but boy does it make life easy. Hard to warrant the cost on them though and you could pay for an number of installs before adding up to the tool.

Heard that.

I did have access to all of these awesome tools. Those days are gone.

I had sent James my HK USP 45 C and it feels great. Just have to get used to LEM. I needed to convert that particular sized HK to LEM because the safety / decocker would chew into me in long range sessions. I don't want to imagine a class with it.

Kinda amped, can't wait to get this all done!

If I could find a decent deal on a USP Compact 9mm, I'd be all over it. The HK Expert trigger is really nice. The Sig SRT has spoiled me for DA/SA guns, to the point where every time that I think about getting a P30, I get shivers about the long, mushy reset. An HK45C and an HK USPc in 9mm are definitely 'someday' guns.

This makes my heart happy. :p :D

every time that I think about getting a P30, I get shivers about the long, mushy reset.

It's a million times better once it's broken in. There's nothing mushy whatsoever about the reset on my P30L. It's a little longer, sure, but it's smoother than the reset on my USP with match trigger - just not as short.

Everyone that complains about HK triggers is referring to new in box triggers. After thousands of rounds or dry fires they break in very nicely. The trigger on my P2000 is every bit as good as any Sig SRT trigger has ever been, it's just got a longer reset which doesn't bother me at all. Doesn't slow me down and doesn't effect accuracy. There's nothing about shooting fundamentals that depend on a super short reset.

True, but it can be noticeable when you go back and forth with pistols that do have shorter resets. I love my P2000. God knows I've had at least a half dozen of them going back a number of years. But if I shoot my Glock a lot or my P226 with SRT or the CZs I had with CGW parts and then go back to the P2000 I occasionally short stroke the trigger. Now if I shoot the P2000 regularly it's not an issue. I'm not going to lie and say that I wouldn't about faint from happiness if we got a P series match trigger kit. I keep debating sending it off to GGI, but the wait times don't fit with my impatient nature.

I agree. I've heard rumblings about P-series match kits for years. It doesn't even need to be a full match kit, really. I admit a shorter reset would be nice, but in my experience, the P-series triggers are smoother than most USP series triggers. The only exception being my old USP 45 which is now resting in Constantine's safe. That one had a beautiful trigger STOCK trigger. Better than any USP match kit I've had.

But all of the P-series guns I've had have broken in to have really excellent triggers with the exception of the admittedly slightly long reset.

I would like to try one of the new 4.1 kits that give a short reset to the P-series LEM triggers. I hope that change extends to the V3 versions eventually.

My P30L is my favorite HK of all that I've owned, but the P2000 has a slightly better trigger - presumably just the results of tolerance stacking. I've considered swapping the guts over to the P30L for a while, just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe that'll be a good project while I'm off work for a few days here before Christmas.

Regarding GGI, send it to Rick Holm from Lazy Wolf. He was the HK guy at GGI and the original developer of the GGI HK packages. He has since branched off into his own. I don't know if his wait times are as long as GGI or not, but he's who you want. If you want faster turn around times, Robert Burke does great HK work, too.

Good call. There must be something in the air. I just did the same thing. I had a mish mash of nice guns and last month I sold or traded all of them and went with all HK's. I converted all of mine to LEM however. The only one that isn't an LEM is the VP9 and that's posted for sale or trade for another hammer fired HK. Love them!!

Pretty sure a USP 9 will be my next handgun purchase. The USPs were always a very solid choice even if the trigger might be a little lacking in refinement.

I jumped into HK's with a HK p30s purchase a few years ago. Hated its trigger, loved everything else. Sold it. A year later got the HK fever again, bad! Bought nine of them in about two months. Mostly USP models with match triggers, then a Mark 23, followed by a p7, then a p7m8 and finally a p30sk.

A few months ago I realized my hands were getting beaten up shooting .45ACP, so I sold all of my guns in that caliber. Really hated to part with the Mark 23.

Realized I preferred shooting my X-Series SIG's (p226's) because of their triggers compared to all my other pistols. And, that I didn't really like the looks of operator/combat pistols with their rails. Sold the rest of my HK's. That left me with one operator/combat styled pistol, a CZ75 SP-01 Shadow Target ll. Don't like its looks, but love the way it shoots and handles.

Except for weight, I feel the p7 series are the best and safest carry pistols in the world. Of course, I haven't tried everything, but still have an opinion.

With some trigger work, the p30sk would rank right up there with the p7's. Even with that ugly rail.

My poor body must be weirdly shaped. The Kimber SOLO is about the only pistol I can easily conceal. The SIG p232 comes in second. I envy those who manage to conceal a full size pistol.
