HK USP 40C Questions

I have a full size HK USP .40 and absolutely love it. In looking for a CCW I have finally decided on the USP .40C. Has anyone out there had any experience using this weapon for CC? Also, has anyone else had trouble finding one? Out of about 10 gun shops, I've only been able to find one. It had night sights, but was a trade-in and they wanted $800 for it! It lists new for under $700! Also, after finding one (at a reasonable price, if possible) I'm thinking of taking it to an HK armorer to see if I can have the control lever removed and a larger hammer installed. Instead of being DA only, it would be like a Sig (minus the deckocker). I realize that removing the deckocker poses a safety risk, but I don't see it as being any more dangerous than manually lowering the hammer on a shotgun or lever action rifle. I don't even know if this can be done. Any thoughts?

Therapydude,
I am currently carrying a USP .40C. I do not know where you live but I had no trouble finding mine in Massachusetts.I paid just under $700 for mine. I use an Uncle Mike's IWB holster for small of the back carry. I have had no problems concealing it.

I can not comment on changing the hammer etc. I am happy with the stock model.

I have USPc's in 9 and 40. Love them both. I do not understnd why you would want to remove the decock lever. It;s quite flush with the frame and is designed so that when decocking, the firing pin is BLOCKED - it's not just a matter of letting the hammer down. Again, the firing pin is blocked during decock.

Hammer? Why change it? It's designed for CCW with the flush shape.

No flame but if you want to change so many good features, maybe consider another pistol?

The USPc's are excellent right out of the box, IMHO.

One consideration if you are not LEO is that NO pre-ban standard-capacity magazines exist for the USP Compacts. It would just bug me to no end knowing my pistol should be holding 2, 3, or 5 more rounds.

If this is going to bug you, and you already have a full-size USP, I'd suggest going really small. The Glock 27 will hold 10 rounds of .40SW, and it much smaller than the USP-C, yet still controllable. And you wouldn't have any of the hammer, decocker, or thumb safety sillyness.

As an added bonus, you can drop in a stock Glock33 barrel if you want to use 357SIG.

I really like HKs, but the Glocks do grow on you.

Crap!

I just read a thread a day or two ago about hammer replacement in USPs. I can't find it now. I checked the other H&K sites. It might have been here, check posts for the last 5 days...

The USP40C is a fine weapon. It is a little thick but in the cool weather with a pullover type sweater it conceals well. I haven't done this but the only mod I would make to the safety is to disable it and still allow decocking, unless I intended to carry cocked and locked. Once at the range I mistakenly engaged the safety in the middle of a string of shots.

I've had my USP40C for about 5 months now, and like it very much. Honestly, it took me a bit to get used to this gun as I was used to shooting SIGs exclusivly. Obviously you won't have this problem since you already have a full-sized.

Sorry to hear about the price and availability you're (not) finding. My local HK dealer has them in stock regularly for $540 in variant 1 w/o night sights. However, I do know that HK shipments have been slow recently...

Excellent pistol! I have three. :)

Better reliability in the 40 than the Glock according to DEA and INS/Border Patrol tests (which was tougher than the FBI test).
Better reliability and accuracy in my hands too. My USP 40s shot smaller groups than my Glock 32s and jammed less too. The USP in 357 is even better (Jarvis 357 barrels drop in, work w the 40 mags BTW). More muzzle flip than the Glocks, but less felt recoil to me. Like the grip/trigger better too. I always was kinda odd...

DEA and INS/BP have contracts to issue them, maybe why they are scarce in some areas? About $650 blue, $730 stainless around here (when you can find them).

I have been carrying mine in an inside the waistband now for about a year. I love this gun. I am thinking about the dillon pager pal holster though. As far as price there is one place in Mass that has them in stock right now. They are always back ordered it seems. Their price is $639.00 no night sites. Their web page is www.fsguns.com . All you need is a shop near you to transfer to. Good luck.
