HK USP .40 Compact range report

I just bought one, since until now I didn't have a .40 S&W. I have to say I'm fairly impressed. Despite a heavy DA trigger it was easy to keep the gun on taget and the shots in the black at 10 yards, using 165gr. TMJ loads. It does shoot a couple of inches high, but that's not a big deal. I assume it's zeroed at 25 yards, or else for 180gr. ammunition. No FTF's, controls were easy to reach without shifting the grip. Recoil was on par with a steel-framed .45 auto.

My only real complaint is that the 10-round magazines are a bear to load past seven rounds. That, and they should really lose that useless finger-rest floorplate!

You can replace the finger-rest floorplate with a flat one. They aren't as common as the finger-resties, but they are available. All my mags are flat-based. The plates run about $8.

Yes, $8 for a piece of plastic -- welcome to the world of Heckler & Koch. I can only assume it's a finely German-engineered precision piece of plastic. :p

Hey man, nice gun... I've carried mine for almost four years now and shoot IDPA with it. You are correct, HK SOP is a 25yd zero with 180gr FMJ... I've got two test targets from them with that notation from when having night sights installed on my USPs. Now about the mag baseplates... I carry the flat mag in the gun, but like the extended floorplates on the spares... gives me something to grab, makes changes a little easier, but like Elmo said, they are interchangeable. The magazines do get easier to load fairly quickly, by the way. Enjoy your gun, I love mine.
