HK SP-89 Worth 4 Grand??????

Saw a new HK SP-89 at a local gun shop (Central Arkansas). Price was $4,000!!!!! I know that the combination of being HK and pre-ban increases the price exponentially, but is this gun really worth that much money? I'd love to have one, though I can't see much use for it, other than the target range, and, though I've never fired one, I doubt that accuracy is its strong suit. Any opinions?

I have seen them for sale at that price but I don't know if anyone is buying. A more realistic price is $3000 to $3500. Most people that buy them have a registered HK auto sear and convert them to a full auto MP5.

had a chance to pick up a SP-89 for $1500 in 1995, passed that (thinking it was too expensive). Another chance for $2500 in 1998 , again passed that. Last year, picked one up for $3000. Is it worth it? probably not. Just depends on how bad you want it. Remember, you don't really need it. You just want it.

I bought one back when they first came out and were having a hard time selling them. (remember circa '90?) Had it for a short time, sold it for less than a grand and turned a profit...

read this thread and turned my stomach... I would like to get my hands on the younger me right about now.

Bought it for $800 and sold it for $1000 back in 1992 and thought I was the coolest dude !
No way is it worth 4K, it is only a pistol.

They pop up from time to time at gun shows in N. TX for $2800 to $3000 or just a little more for one nib. I'd love to have one but for that kind of money, I don't know, there are a lot of other really nice guns that you could buy instead.

As with anything, material or otherwise, value is subjective. As far as the "anemic" cartridge, the 9MM that one can use in the MP5 or SP89 is not your typical 900 FPS ammo. Subgun, UZI, NATO +p+, whatever you wnat to call it can match or surpass .357 magnums. I don't think 30 rounds of .357 as fast as you can pull them qualifies as anemic.

As to the accuracy, I don't know about the 9MMs, but the .40 Anonymous version of the MP5 that the FBI tested after the Miami massacre (no, not last week!) did a 1.1" group at 25 yards. Not too shabby.

Well, here is a good story for you.. I bought an SP89 for only $2500 about 2 years ago. I live in CA and the SP89 was banned for sale as of January 1, 2000... So, of course, prices on it just skyrocketed... How high you might wonder? Well, I sold it in early Dec. '99 for a whopping $5000!!! It sold with one 15 rnd. mag, one 30 rnd mag, the loader, and unloader tools. It was in excellent condition... Pretty amazing, huh? Well, with that all said... $4000 is probably too much considering what the other members are saying... But then again, can you imagine if the SP89 were listed to be banned in your State?? Just think how much the price would jump... Food for thought...

i was SOOOO in love with that gun for the longest time .. and kind of still am .. but i recently found out that the gun originally sold for 750 dollars back in the very early 90's when it was first introduced to the u.s. before clinton passed the bill in 94 banning them from importation in the u.s. WHAT A SHAME.. but you know what?.. i'm still gonna get one .. even though its ridiculously hard to get around here .. money talks !

IMHO, if your intention is to keep it as is, it is not worth the prices they are currently at. If your intention is to buy an auto sear sometime down the road to convert it into an MP5K or MP5K-PDW, it starts to make a little more sense. It is still big $$$, but at least a bit more useful/functional than a big clunky semi pistol.

Rocko
