HK P7M8 deal?

Quick question for you fans of the H&K P7M8 pistols.

Today I saw an "unissued police" model in a local shop. It had the police marking on the slide ground off and the slide had been refinished after this was done. The slide now has more of a brownish color than the stock black. Other than that it appears to be new. The price was $730.

Question to you is, is this a good deal on this pistol?

Anything I should know about these pistols regarding reliability, longevity or parts availability? I've heard very good things regarding accuracy but little else.

Thanks.

This is one the refurbished P7s. From what I have read about them, reliability is good.

However, there have been three complaints about them, two of which you have mentioned. First, the brown or purple slide that happened when the slide was re-blued. Second, the mill mark. Third, some purchasers have had problems with loose sights.

Despite what some dealers have said, HK is not offering a warranty on these pistols.

$730 is an average price. The ones that I have seen were usually $699.

I plan to buy a P7M8, but I am waiting for a new one.

Cawdor,

Thanks for the reply. Hmmmm, maybe this isn't such a good deal if there is no warranty. Are the new ones in your area going for between $900 - $1,000 like they are around here?

As a proud member of the "Cult of the P7," I strongly encourage you to buy the thing now. It's a refurb, that much I know, though I've heard conflicting things about where they came from. If it's like the other refurbs I've seen, it's pretty close to a new gun, save for the mill mark on the slide.
The guns are flawlessly reliable, easy to control, very comfortable to carry, and they wear very well. The whole thing is constructed of extremely hard steel. The only drawback is that after fifty rounds, in rapid succession, the thing gets hot. Not an issue in a defensive shooting, but at the range, it helps to bring another gun to shoot while you are waiting for the thing to cool off.

Cypselus,

Thanks for the encouragement. :)

>at the range, it helps to bring another gun to shoot
>while you are waiting for the thing to cool off.

That's usually not a problem. Trying to decide what to bring without filling up the trunk of the car, now -that's- the hard part. :)

BTW, welcome to TFL.

I had one of these p-7 police trades and the only problem i had was the white site inserts fell out, this was probally due to the sites not being removed when the slide was reblued. this was the most accurate hand gun i have ever fired. I paid 525.00, gun was like new apeared to have less than 2-300 rounds, I tried to sell it because it just wasn't for me,but it sat in the case for 800.00 for a few months with most people just doing the oh's and aw's over the mystical p-7m-8, don't get me wronge this was the finast made and shooting handgun I have ever own'd,just did not turn out to be working/carry piece. while looking for a compact 45 for carry, had a g-30 (grip too fat), i was going to trade the p-7 for an H&K compact 45 and almost did but it was a little to big and i kept having 2nd. thoughts,I ended up trading it for a stainless S&W CS-45, which i love(although I despise S&W ended up doing.) to sum it up the p-7 is a magnificently made handgun with a huge cult following, just make sure you have all your facts and its your cup of tea before you buy.

one more thing while picking up some ammo to shoot the outher day,the dealer i tradded the p-7 still has it in his case with a tag of $1147.00 (i did put night sights on it)I did this trade 8 or 9 months ago after it sat in anouther dealers case on consinment from me for 2 months.

Joe,

I said $730 is an average price because the ones that I have seen lately are higher than $699. Four Seasons Guns had some used P7s; the price was $749 - http://www.fourseasonsguns.com/

I can't find any new P7s in my area (Houston, TX) right now. If you can find a new one for $900, buy it. No mill mark, no brown slide, and a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser - that is worth $170 to me.

When I first started looking for a handgun, I wanted a P7M8 real bad. I found one in a local store, and they wanted $1000 for it. Not too terrible, until they pointed out that it was used and only had one mag with it!!!

I found another local slightly used P7 for $875, and after that started looking at other guns. I would like one in the future, but my priorites are elsewhere for now.

When I do look, it will be in a good wide area and include the internet, because good deals on these are hard to come by.

Thanks again everyone for the replies. I think I might sit this one out and take my time looking around both locally and on the net.

Since it's nothing I've -got- to have, I have plenty of time to think about it.

I have only had the chance to fondle one P7M8.. It was at one of my favorite shops about 2 months ago.. I had heard a lot of very good things about the P7's and, while buying my new Kimber, asked to see it.. It was a refurb, with a very distinctive reddish, brown color on the slide only.. First impressions were VERY favorable.. It seemed thin, concealable, and built like a freakin' TANK!! I liked the squeeze cock function... Price was $799.. I had heard of better prices, and since I was already in the middle of a purchase, decided not to buy it.. I will probably pick one up the next time I see it...

I bought my p-7m8 for a price I could not refuse,my deiler had just recieved it while I was in his shop and something strange must have come overhim because when i asked "how much" his response was tell me what you would pay right now for it! I had only seen 2 or 3 before and I new they sould for between 750.00 & 900.00 used so I said $525.00 and he took it, it must have been very close to his cost. :(

Here is the real scoop:

I called HK last week and talked to them about several issues.

1. The P7M8 police trade-ins have dried up and the factory is no longer refurbishing them. The supply is dry straight from the horse's mouth. If your dealers catch wind of this, the price may be adjusted upwards.

2. New P7M8s are very difficult to find compared to other guns. $1100 to $1200 is what I've seen on the Net and locally.

3. $730 for a refurbished P7 is a good deal. Remeber, it has been reblued at the factory and been inspected and had any and all springs/levers/catches replaced. Buying a used P7 that wasn't refurbished is risky.

4. The people selling the $699 P7M8s including Four Seasons and Kentucky Imports bought them from police agencies - they are not refurbished and have moderate holster wear on the slides. They do not look like new guns. Not well maintained. Have you looked down the barrel of some of your local cops' guns? Many hardly find the time to hit the range unless they can't hit the silhoutte and then they "worried" that they can't qualify when 8/10 armed civilians can and do do better at the range. Most local US cops don't clean them well enough especially something that isn't a 5-minute cleanu p like a Glock or a Sig.

5. Yeah you have that mill mark on the slide of the factory refurbed ones but hey, it's basically a new gun. Why blow the $300-400? As soon as you shoot it, it's used anyways. Let some other person eat the depreciation. If its a quality gun, I always try to buy used first.

6. $730 is a good price on a factory refurb now. If you have good trading skill, you may be able to get it below $700.

The fever over these guns has passed and dealers can now expect to hold onto them longer now. I remember several months ago, dealers complaining that they had orders in to HK for more police trade-ins but now they're happy.

PS - with so many people biting the big one on the stock market drop and portfolio's down 30-50%, $1000 gun sales have slowed down. maybe you should go for the 10% over dealer cost deal like the guy's above?

Recommendation:
Just get it!

Pocketman,

If I could find one for $525 I would jump on it fast. :) That has to best deal I've heard on a P7.

jtduncan,

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to decide between buying one HK or two CZs (one 9mm and one .45) for the same money. Like I can afford to spend this much anyway.

Oh well, I'll get over it after a trip or two to the range. ;)
