HK P7 OWNERS--HELP!

I just bought a factory refurbished HK P7M8. Hooray!!!! I've always wanted one. So, before I ruin my new pistol with my ignorance, I have some questions for HK P7 owners out there:

1. Can I dry fire the pistol without damaging it?

2. The slide feels a little rough when I pull it back. There is resistance that I think is due to barrel lockup with the slide but I'm not sure. The resistance/roughness is only at the beginning of the slide's travel backwards. Is this normal?

3. How do you clean your pistol? I've got the manual, but are there any tricks or tips that you've learned? How often do you clean the gas cylinder?

4. Any more tips or advice for an HKP7 owner? Accessories? Holsters?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Congratualations! I've had both 9mm P7 versions. Great guns and built like tanks but perform like champs.

I would recommend using a nice snap cap to save the battery of peens on the inside of your slide. I like the nonPachmyer ones. Red with brass springs!

2. The slide feels a little rough when I pull it back. There is resistance that I think is due to barrel lockup with the slide but I'm

Yes, it's a real heavy slide so most of get a good syntheic gun grease and lube it up.

3. How do you clean your pistol? I've got the manual, but are there any tricks or tips that you've learned? How often do you
clean the gas cylinder?

Clean the barrel and slide assebly like any other gun. But do a full breakdown cleaning every 1,000 rounds. You'll need to snag an English version manual off of somebody. Gas chamber cleaned ever 100-200 rounds.

4. Any more tips or advice for an HKP7 owner? Accessories? Holsters?

MP7 Pro bore cleaner to clean the piston assembly. Good brass brush for cleaning the piston. I'm a nylon amidexterous Passport holster kind of guy since my P7 is briefcase carried most of the time.

But goto Park Cities Tactical and lookk for the Cult of the P7 and you'll find a couple of hundred P7 owners like me and SAWBONES to help you out. HKPro is pretty good too.

There are extensive and detailed cleaning instructions listed at Park Cities.

Enjoy your P7 and shoot it hot!

Thanks jtduncan!!!!!!!! I really appreciate all of the advice. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Thanks again!!!! I'm headed to the range today!!!

WestTexas,

JTDuncan's tips are spot on. Because of the nature of the operating system, I find that grease works the best on my P7M13.

Did you get one of the gas system reamers with your refurb? It looks a little like a butter knife with a triangular point?

If you didn't, GET ONE from H&K. This is the ONLY tool that should be used to clean the gas cylinder. It is basically a scraper that is inserted into the gas port and twisted to remove the built-up carbon. Use of any other tool can damage the system.

One of the weak points of the entire system is that the wings on the firing pin retainer are know to crack off after a time. Be careful when removing and installing it, and inspect it carefully every time you clean it.

This has been the biggest problem with these guns for the US Park Police, which uses both the M8 and M13.

Galco makes a VERY nice IWB holster for this gun.

Mike, thanks for the tips. I do have that plastic gas piston cleaner. I also have a long brass brush cleaner. Is this for the barrel?

You may be feeling some buildup in the gas system. It generally shows up first at the beginning of slide travel. You ONLY want to use the HK tools for cleaning the gas system. The metal scraper needs to be inserted and twisted slowly all the way to the bottom, then clean with the hopefully bronze brush. The are manuals on-line at www.hkp7.com. Good luck with your new weapon, mine has several thousand rounds thru it and it looks like new. Hard chrome finish sure helps.

West Texas,

Yes, the brush is for the barrel.
