HK P30SKS

Hi Folks,
So, I decided that not having any 9mm's in my collection was reason enough to get a new gun.:D

I really dig it. It is big enough not to shoot like a little gun, yet small enough to pocket carry. I'm not a fan of sticker fired weapons and this fits very well with my other traditional action semi's (Sigs). It has a 1911 style frame mounted thumb safety, which I thought I would never use due to the double action trigger pull, but I actually find I like it. I've done a lot of training with my 1911 and sweeping the safety on draw is mostly muscle memory (though I needed to practice a bit to get it back, as I haven't been actively carrying my 1911 for several years now).

This is also my first plastic gun.... The first thing that drew me to it, was that it feels much more "solid" than many of the other plastic guns I looked at (mostly S&W and Rugers -- I don't live in a Free State).

Another thing that drew me to this gun is that it is fully ambidextrous. I've never owned a semi auto that is fully ambidextrous.

Take down is a piece of cake, just a tad harder than a Sig, as you have to hold pressure on the slide when actuating the takedown release.

I also dig that the magazine sits completely flush in the grip. I thought I might have trouble getting used to the mag release, as I've never had a trigger guard mag release, but I adapted really quickly and it became a non-issue.

It's only been to the range once, but functioned flawlessly with both 115g ball range ammo and 147g HP defensive ammo.

I also considered the a P30L, but this guy is much more versatile, comes in at a much better price point and offers me the same 10rd capacity (again, I'm not in a Free State). Of course, I considered another Sig, mainly a 239, but this one "spoke to me" more and offered higher capacity.

Sorry for the long post....

I have a P30 with the V3 DA/SA trigger variant, great gun, very reliable and accurate, It's a fine choice for what you are using it for, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Congrats!

I have the same exact model under high consideration. I just LOVE my P30LS. I put a 10LB hammer spring and new style FPBS in it and the trigger is really sweet now. SA is nice and crisp 4.5 LBs and DA is a smooth 8.5 LBs.

The P30SK can also use 13 round magazine from P2000/USP-C compact. Grip extenders are supposed to be available soon and some are already using the P2000SK grip extender. That makes the height of the P30SK to be about the same as the Glock 19. Of course 15 round magazines from P30/VP9 can be used it in too.

I've been carrying it for several days, alternating between iwb and pocket carry. It's super easy and comfortable... then again, I regular carry a 4" redhawk comfortably, so I might not be the best judge of comfort.:D

Nice upgrades! The DA trigger pull is a bit heavy, but it is so smooth that it doesn't really bother me, so I'll probably leave it as is....

If I were in a "Free State" I'd be carrying the 15 rd mag as my spare.

I like having the P30 (no thumb safety) with the V3 DA/SA trigger variant. But if I had an "S" (manual safety) version of the P30 or the P30SK, I wouldn't hesitate to go with the V1 Light LEM (Enhanced DAO) trigger variant, this is a great trigger once you practice with it and get the hang of how it shoots.

In MA, you take what you can get.... :o When buying the gun, I thought the thumb safety was a waste. Now, I kinda like having it.

Is the V1 a true DOA, or is it more of a striker system?

Why is the compact so much cheaper than the full size? I would think the P30 would see the same discounts. I just picked up a P2000 new for $650 so at least those came down in price to match.

I've been wondering this myself... the P30L I was looking at was nearly 50% more expensive than the p30sks. My best guess is that they decided to sacrifice margin for market share. Perhaps the sub compact market is much more price sensitive????

Nice purchase, congratulations!

I own a bunch of HK's. Bought a p30s about two years ago, hated the trigger, loved everything else, but sold it. Discovered the USP models with match triggers; love them. Kept reading about the p30sk. So I took the plunge, bought the V1 model with decocker, no safety. I think I paid $535 for it. :) Great gun! Also have the SIG p239 SAS Gen. ll model, similar in size. It, too, is a great gun.

That is a great price! Here in MA, you have to take what you can get (which adds a whole new dimension to the lube threads, let me tell you  )

Are there any internal differences between the P30 and SK barring barrel and guide rod length?

I think mechanically they are the same and use the same materials.... just a little less on the pks due to the smaller frame. But I'm not entirely sure.

The DA trigger on every SK I've tried feels lighter than the DA on my P30.

So... I noticed something interesting. The sks ships with the large backstap and medium side grips installed. I changed out the grips and backstrap to the small ones. The gun became immediately muzzle heavy. I put the large backstrap back on it it regained its balance. It seems that the large backstrap acts as a counter-lever of sorts. Fortunately, this combination works for me, but if my hands were smaller, I could see this as a problem.

I've been living with this gun for a week or two and I've found that I really appreciate the manual thumb safety. Unlike my 1911, the slide can still be operated with the safety engaged. This makes it much less stressful loading/unloading the weapon. One of my least favorite things about my autoloaders (my sigs included) are the moments where the weapon is cocked and unlocked in the house. I may be alone with that peeve. Anyway, I'm finding the safety is giving me much more utility than I anticipated when I bought the gun and am very happy to have it.

I've been having a terrible time finding one locally. I have an LEM version on order, but no time estimate for delivery:rolleyes:
