HK P-7 : Think I got ripped....

Just completed a transaction on one of these from the gunsamerica site. The ad listed, and he comfirmed thru e-mail as 100% new. You can only imagine my disgust when I turned it over and seen a grind mark on the slide  Did I miss something here? Seems to me I got one of the refurbs floating around. I also passed on one of them 4 wks ago for around $150 less than this one. (not to mention shipping, trasfer) I did use a credit card for this and was wondering if I have any recourse.I'm sure this is a great gun, just not what I was expecting. If I do indeed remain stuck with it,does anyone have suggestions on having slide hard chromed and getting grind mark removed? Just when you get your hopes up....

Jspy, the HK P7 refurbs are excellent pistols and a good value, but they are definitely not "new". It appears that the seller was either very confused or deliberately fraudulent in billing your P7 as a new gun. The refurbs have been for sale recently in the $650-700 range. If that is what you paid, and you like the piece, I think you'll be happy with it. Otherwise, I'm sure the "fine print" on the auction site will provide you with directions for making a return. I would try contacting the seller first, and then go from there- credit card company, attorney general's office, etc.
PS. The grind mark is hard to remove completely, but some people have had some success with having the slide buffed and polished, then refinished or hard-chromed. I hope things turn out well.

Sorry to hear about your P7...

That sucks. I would have him refund your money, ust on principle. But keep in mind if the guy is shady he may well try and disappear on you. It helps that you used a credit card. Try contacting him and getting a discount. I hope that it wasnt a certain wordy HK dealer who deals on GA from the "808" state. I wont name names but it should be fairly obvious. I have spoken to/dealt with him locally and he is seriously off his rocker, but does indeed have a lot of rare HKs.
Here is a picture of my P7 refurb. It was hard chromed by Virgil Tripp for $125. It took a week and was machined to minimize the look of the mark. Others have posted over at park cities tactical that there is someone able to now completely fill it in and refinish. I paid $699 for the gun, but have seen it locally as low as $599. Good luck and keep us updated. If the dealer is bad, please post his name. I have found that the HK "community" is very good at "punishing" dirty dealers.

Have an M8 refurb that paid $700 for last Spring. It looked and operated as if new but does have that disgusting grind mark also........The slide has been reblued and came out, like some do, in a "Plum" color.....Thought it was really ugly @ 1st but has grown on me and now kinda like it. It will, however, be sent out to be Metalifed {in NW PA} eventually. The Metalifed P7's have seen on "The Cult of the P7" @ Park Cities Tactical look great. http://www.metalifeind.com http://www.parkcitiestactical.com

Very nice photography on your hard chromed P7, MPower ... as in fine autos from Munich?

Hope you situation works out, Skevlar.

Please tell me about re-furb'd P7s! Are they one in the same as re-furb'd German police pistols? Any of the high cap P7s, too? I take it H&K (assuming they do to the re-furb) purposefully mark the slide for tracking purposes ... is that the mark on the slide above the trigger guard? What is the quality level on the re-furbs? Who sells them?! How many mags usually?

Aloha JR.

Thanks for the compliment. To answer some of your questions, HK released a few thousand refurbed P7M8s last year. They were German police trade ins, and supposedly were shot and carried little if at all. I saw a few that looked well used and some that looked brand new. They are easy to spot by the milled off mark in the slide (you can see the mark in the picture above) which is a German Police insignia which has been removed. Quality is as good as NIB P7s, except they have been reblued, which usually turnss the slide into a dark plum color. Most either grow to like it, or hard chrome it. I like it, but as P7s rust readily I had mine chromed. Problems...some have said their white dot inserts on the sites fall out. We have attributed this to the rebluing process eating away at them. Most just use it as an excuse to put nite sites on. They come in a serial #ed box with tools and a manual, 2 magazines, and NO WARRANTY from HK. If you can find one for $600-700, buy it. If you only find them for $800 and up, consider finding a new non refurb, as they can be found for $1050 or so. Great guns. do a search and you will find a lot of info. Sorry they did not refurb any P7M13s. As to who sells them, they were all over the place last year but getting more difficult to find now.

BTW MPower is indeed in reference to mildly massaged musclecars from Munchen. :)

Now that this has come up, I need to ask y'all a question that's been bugging me a while.

Why did HK grind off those police markings on the P7 refurbs, anyway? That totally destroys any historical or collector signifigance, at least to me. Owning a service pistol from the West Berlin PD or the Autobahn highway patrol, for example, would've been cool as hell.

Were HK or the individual police departments afraid of the bad publicity if one of their pistols were found on some punk gangbanger? Is that what they think of their target market, i.e., you and me? That could be construed as an insult.

Did anyone ask HK about this?

A similar thing happened to me last year.

I got mine refinished in Metacol III (black) by Arizona Response Systems ( http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com ). The gun looks great and the grind mark is not as noticeable any more. The grind mark used to bother me so much that I actively disliked the gun; now it doesn't bother me at all.

Try to work it out with the seller. Call H&K, confirm that the gun is a refurb with no warranty, and get the name and number of the H&K rep you are speaking to. Also, find some "comps" on the internet to show what your refurb is really worth. Clearly lay out your position in a cordial e-mail to the seller, inviting him to call the H&K rep and check the comps. If you want to return the gun, say so; if you want a partial refund, propose a reasonable figure. Give the seller a reasonable but definite deadline to respond, and if you don't get satisfaction, then call your credit card company and tell them you want to dispute the charge. If it gets to this point, you will be able to show a good faith effort to resolve the dispute, and you'll have all or your reasons laid out in a copy of your e-mail to the seller.

The bottom line is that the gun was represented to be new when it wasn't. When all is said and done, you should get some relief.

Even if the seller may be a crook, give him an out by assuming he made an honest mistake. If you back him into a corner by accusing him of ripping you off, it will make everything more difficult.

Good luck!

Bob Munck in Florida does an amazing job of getting rid of the grind mark. The hardchroming on my M8 was done by Horace Ford. He was one of the co-founders of Checkmate.

eje: I would like to hear more about your Metacol III finish and your evaluation of Arizona Response Systems. I hate to interupt this thread, but I couldn't E-Mail you personally. I am looking for a finish for my HP and am not getting a whole lot of info. Feel free to E-mail me.

eje; thanks for the suggestions. So far I have not heard anything back from the seller. I would prefer some kind of adjustment myself. Now that I do have one of these I am reluctant to let go of it.
Incursion; that looks fantastic...:) this is what I was seeing in my head when I decided to buy one! What kind of money are we talking about to have it look like this?
Thanks for all the imput;I will let you know how things progress...:)

By the way this guy has about 50 guns for sale on gunsamerica, and a reply from the gunsamerica site said just to return it....

I paid $600 for the gun, but it had about 200 rounds through it. The finish and mill mark removal cost me $190. With all the shipping and FFL fees added in the total cost of this P7M8 was $875.

I have sent another e-mail asking for an adjustment or possible return. I havn't had a chance to call HK and get any more info. on it. I guess worst possible scenario is that I am "stuck" with a great gun :) Other than the grind mark the rest of it looks fantastic...

444, I have heard that the Metacol III finish wears extremely quickly. I think there is a thread over at parkcitiestactical about it.

even if it does

Metacol III is guaranteed for life. Just send it back and they'll redo it. I had Mr. Graham refinish my USP 40 slide in Classic Patina Met III and it looks great.

Icursion; I noticed of course everything has been removed on the one side of the slide. My question is do they take the other side down any to balance it out or not? Also how do you get in touch with the guys who did the work on yours? So far no good news to report for me...:(

The grind mark is not as deep as it looks. It's only a few thousandths of an inch deep according to Bob Munck. You can use the yahoo phone directory. Do a search for Bob Munck in FL.

Blast from the past...

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but there is a good chance that the P7 that was subjected to the unsightly grind/mill mark IS new... what probably happened was some police agency either in Germany or the US had some specially marked P7's ordered and made however there was either a production overrun or they cut back on the contract.

I have heard of several people who have bought the NIB P7's with the mill mark.

This may NOT be a case of fraud especially if the P7 did appear to be NIB.
