HK Low Problem

I recently picked up a HK USPc 40. This gun is shooting 4-5 inches low at 10-15 yards from hands and rest hold. ANyone know of anywhere to pickup a lower front sight for this?

Hey Gravity ,

I had a friend who bought a USP .40 compact that appeared to be very lightly used. It was in pretty much perfect condition.

The first time out with the gun he said it shot very low. I wrote it off as operator error and told him to have someone else shoot the gun. He did and it still shot low. I took it to the range one day and shot it off a bench rest. Groups printed anywhere from 4" to 6" low depending on the ammo used (nice tight groups by the way).

I called H&K and they were friendly and helpful. They sent the lowest front sight they had free of charge(recieved it three days after calling). Problem is it was exactly the same as the one on the gun.

My friend called H&K and sent the gun to them. They returned it two weeks later with a test target, problem solved, no charge (only thing they didn't do was explain how they fixed the problem). They did this regardless of the fact that my friend wasn't the original owner (I believe their warranty applies to original owner).

I guess this is a long way of saying send it back to them and they will fix it. A lot of people have said H&K's service bites, but I have had very good experiences every time with them.

What ammo are you using? Something really light and fast, maybe?

Have you tried different bullet weights?

If so, does the POI change?

Ammo issues are a longshot, though - Shake's advice is sound.

I have the same problem with my gun.I think it has to do with the crummy trigger,at least in my case.I can shoot one hole with a Glock 23 at 15 yards, but the HK has sub-par accuracy and shoots low.I would not buy another one.

Gravity,my problem is shooter error. You might want to try painting the front sight flouresnt orange.Even with the white dot the front sight can get lost during target aquisition.Another train of thought is how you hold the gun.I shoot with a high-thumb and ride the safety. This is not an ideal hold for that gun. After shooting 1911s for years, there is no turning back for me.Just a couple schools of thought.Hope this helps.

Oddly enough, I had the same problem with a USP 9c series pistol and found a unique pattern to it.

When I fired the 9c using commercial 115gr FMJ bullet from Wally World, the shots were about 2" low at 15 yards. However, firing 115 +P, 124gr NATO, or 147 grain ammo put the bullets right on target.

The way I figure it is that since recoil impulse acts on the gun during bullet travel, the heavier and/or faster bullets put the sights more on target than the lower recoil impulse of the light 115 grain standard pressure loads. Since the USP was designed as a combat pistol, it seemed logical to me that it would perform optimally with a stout full-power load.

I have a H&K .40C and have never had that issue. I have nightsights installed and use Amercian Eagle 165 gr loads. The only other round I tried is the HydraShock which are right on, unreal accuracy.

Sounds like user error to me (especially from just 10-15 yards) unless you have night sights.

I tested around 4-5 USP Compacts out-of-box, shot them for accuracy from 25 meters. They all produced pretty tight, point of aim groups with the only exception of the factory night sights which shot low about 1-2 inches...

Goat - this is due to the angle of the grip.

When I switch between my HKs, Glock, and Burrito (er um Beretta) it always takes me a shot to remember what the correct sight picture needs to be for that weapon.

The angle of the grip has nothing to do with the accuarcy of the weapon.

This is not user error, this is normal. The weapon is sighted for 25 meters. My Tactical does the same thing, if I step back to 25 meters, it is dead on.

RenegadeX ,

The USP compact I fired was low at 25 yards (I failed to mention this in my original reply).

Maybe I didn't clarify enough. I have shot it from a rest also and the accuracy was still an issue being low.
How would that be user error?
Anyhow...I called HK today and they said they will send out a lower sight for me to try and if that doesn't work they'll have me send it in. Customer service was real polite and cooperative.
The ammo I have used includes 155/165/180 ammo.
From Federal to Remington to American Eagle (Fed).

Gravity,

I have a USP .45F and it shoots POA/POI. Where ever I place the front sight dot on the target I hit. When I tried the 6 o'clock (pumpkin on the post) set up I shot low. You say you used a bench and still shot low, are you using the 3-dot alignment or the 6 o'clock set up?

Mo_Zam_beek,the grip angle does affect accuracy in my case with that weapon.Accuracy is not defined primarliy on how tight a gun will shoot at a given distance.Pointability and shootability also define accuracy.I am not saying it is a bad gun,it is just a gun I dont care for.

goat,

It seems there are varying opinions on the definition of accuracy (there isn't anything wrong with that).

In determining a gun's accuracy I would throw out the whole grip angle and anything to do with ergonomics and go with what the gun can do fro a solid rest or a vise.

Those things do affect how well an individual shooter can group with a gun, but not how accurate the gun actually is.

My opinion. . .

Gravity,

This is obvious, but look closely at the front sight before you replace the other one. As I said before, the one I recieved for my friend's gun was exactly the same size. You wouldn't want to go to the trouble of installing a new sight only to find it doesn't solve your problem.

I shot my friend's with a variety of ammo as well. They were all the same. Strange because the local sheriff's dept. uses H&K's and they've never had problems with their's (my friend is good buddies with the Sheriff).

Let us know how H&K treats you. I have always had good service from them.

I am holding the sights lined up dead on and not 6 o'clock holding.
I removed the front sight last night and it is marked 6.2 underneath.
The are mailing me a 6.0 so we'll see what that does for it.
