HK Expert 40

I'm trying to round out a collection. I am thinking about a 40 and wanted to know about opinions for an ultra-reliable, accurate out of the box .40 for the shooting range only. I know the HK is just slightly chunky (but still quite manageable) and I was looking at an HK Expert in .40 caliber. Any opinions out there? Accuracy, reliability, convertibility (conversion kits to 9x19 available?), etc. I might be onto one within the next several days. Thanks in advance.

I have an Expert 45. I've not had an opportunity to shoot the 40, so my experience may not completely translate.
My Expert has been 100% what I thought it would be. Extremely accurate plus all the attributes you'd expect from the HK USP line up. If you like the 40 cal round, you probably won't be disappointed especially to round out your collection.
As for 9mm conversions...I saw one recently. From what I was told, it worked fine and the owner was happy he had both.
Good luck

I have seen and foddled a .40 Expert - nice weapon. Didn't get to shot it but a 45 Expert is definitely near the top of my "need" list. H&K makes 9mm Expert but they don't import it to the US. I always thought a 10mm Expert or 357 Sig Expert would be interesting.

The 40 Expert, although listed in HK's civilian catalog, is still a LE only product. HK has not imported ten round magazines that fit the modified 40 Expert well. Only solution is to modify a double stack STI magazine or remove the mag well from the pistol. Allowing existing ten round HK magazines to function.

Spent days shooting the gun last year and can say that the Expert is accurate and a pleasure to shoot. It's those grips that suck! For the money there are other choices with far better feel and will not require modifications.

Shot Show is in three weeks. Lets see if HK coughs up those civilian magazines.

ViLLian to rephrase what you said the original magazines for the 40 Expert with a magwell are the LEO-only product not the gun. My local dealer has a .40 Expert with the magwell removed (in the pouch, I assume) for sell to anyone right now. I actually prefer the Experts like the 45 model with a pinky ext on the mag and no magwell although that does increase capacity.

No! Meant what I said. The GUN is a law enforcement product at this time and not civilian.

Look, HK has some fantastic product, but the management of this company is failure. The distribution is set up so that you have civilian and LE products separate. Ten thousand dollars to become a civilian dealer and eight thousand to be a LE dealer. If you want both, it will cost eighteen thousand dollars to play. Not all civilian dealers are LE dealers and they cannot purchase LE products direct from HK. A firearms dealer has to purchase from either a participating HK law enforcement dealer or distributor. And, HK will not sell LE guns without the standard capacity magazines. It's an LE gun.

If you saw a 40 Expert with the magwell removed, it was a LE gun that was converted by the firearms dealer and not by HK. FFL can sell to anyone without any restriction. If its a civilian sale, all the dealer has to do is peel the LE magazines and add a pair of ten round magazines instead.

Why is this so important? Cost! Or, you can look at it as bang for the buck. HK just had a $50 price increase pre gun as of January first. Also, the method of distribution has been changed again. There will no longer be any LE dealer as of the first of the year and ten or twelve distributors will be put in their places. These new distributors have exclusive territories, no one else can sell LE products in their territories and they will set their own prices for these LE products. Cartel atmosphere and no competition!

So now, unless HK actually distributes a authentic civilian 40 Expert, expect to pay hundreds of dollars more for a product that need modifications out of the box. And does not look esthetically pleasing when converted. There is a sharp corner on the back strap when the well is removed that looks like garbage. Thirteen hundred bucks for a gun that looks like that. I think that most savvy buyers will pass.
