HiViz fibre optic front sight has arrived.

Never bought a front sight that couldn't be fixed with a screw before, and I see that the insertion blade that will slot into the recess in the top of the 4" Redhawk's barrel lacks a hole for the pin.

Can I assume that this needs to be drilled, or should there already be a hole there?

If it is the latter, I need to know so I can send it back!!

If it is the former, any pointers from those that have done it before would be great...

Those sights I find terrible ! My first hunt with my Benelli was my last with that sight AS I walked through the woods in the sun they glowed but in the shade they didn't --Two different pictures . Not for me. Popular ? yes , good ? no !;)

Looks like you have the wrong site. The hole would be above the muzzle and a spring loaded plunger would be accessed through that hole to remove the site.

On the 4" Redhawk, there is only a pin traversing the width of the barrel topstrap, directly below the front sight. The sight base sits flush with the barrrel. I have offered up the new sight alone side the existing original and the area in the lowest point of the mounting lobe does correspond with the pin hole.

It appears to require drilling!!

I fear a massive opportunity to mess up may be coming my way: better tread carefully.

James why not send Hi-Viz an email and explain what you are dealing with and maybe they can answer your question and point you in the right direction.

Probably not a bad idea!

I just hope they don't come up with a generic "find a 'smith" answer, because there are none around here, unless I pay extra and go through a shop "middleman".

What was all the fuss about?!

I measured the pin hole with calibers and the replacement pin. 1.54m and 1.55mm respectively.

I bought a couple of 1.5mm metal bits an small 180g hammer and, on getting home, used an old drill bit as a pin punch. The pin slid out with a few taps (shows it was snug, but not stuck).

I wiggled out the factory original, pressed the new sight in, and use a cordless and the cobalt metal bit to slowly drill a hole through the sight's retention blade, using the barrel's pin holes as a guide. It took very little time to bore a hole through, after which it was just a case of reinserting the pin. I reused the old one.

Now I have a FO front sight on my Redhawk and, frankly, I dig the look!!

I noted mete's reservations, but I think I will be happy enough (should be for €45!!). The originals were not very clear without strong contrast and in certain light, the front nylon blade disappeared altogether! With this sight there is still the same contrast, just with varying intensity from the fibre tip.

I may surround the tip edge with glow-in-the-dark paint to give me a bit more visibility in low light. If it doesn't work, I'll just rub it off.

All in all this is my second alteration to my Redhawk: It's almost a custom revolver, I tell you!!! :D
