His new O/U is giving him a fat cheek.

My son just recieved his new Ruger Red Label 20 ga. O/U Sporting. He is quite comfortable mounting it and from all outward indications the gun seems to fit him fairly well. However, on his first visit to the Skeet range with it, he
was being hit in the face, and ended up with a fat cheek after shooting 5 rounds of skeet.

His previous gun, a 20 ga. Browning Gold gave him no problems whatsoever, and it's lenght of pull etc. was almost identical in dimensions to the Ruger.

Not having the services of a good gun fitter here, could you guys give us some suggestions as to what we might try to solve this problem. Thanks.

The proper way is to find a gun fitter. Without seeing the shooter and gun it's difficult. The only thing you could do is to cut the comb ,height and thickness , till the problem is reduced. This has to be done little by little and shooting in between.

He needs to get his head up. I would guess that he is leaning his head down and over to the stock. Have him put the gun up to his cheek and slide it back to his shoulder rather than shouldering the gun and then putting his face down on the stock. This takes care of most all cases of cheek bruising.
