Hirtenberger Ammo

Does anyone have experience with ammo made by Hirtenberger, of Austria? I am specifically interested in their 9mm, which I've heard is pretty hot. I thought it might be nice to offer my Glocks some home-style cuisine for a change :).

Most of it is actually SMG ammo and not intended for use in pistols. To do so is dangerous.
There pistol ammo is not that special... 'bout the same as your average ammo of the same weight and caliber.

Have fired their 100gr flat point +P+ loading out of my 226. It was accurate and the recoil wasn't too Bad, but I perfer to use JHP ammunition and couldn't find alot of reasons to buy more. I know a place that may have some if you must try some. G.R.

I have chatted with some Europeans who have fed it to their Glocks, which liked them just fine. I do believe that it is a bit difficult to get it here in the states though.

Think of it like shooting really hot magnum loads...
Do that alot and youve just reduced "service life" of the gun. do it too much and you'll see failures... some minor - maybe one major.
I advise to not worry about these and just get ammo that is trusted and available.
Just because some unnamed Euro Dude got away with it a few times... doesnt mean its safe.
Kinda like sticking your arm in a tiger cage... You could get bit!

Hello. I chronographed Hirtenberger 100 gr JSP ammo from a Browning HP and got an average velocity of 1299 ft/sec, which does not seem all that hot. Cases were easily resized and primers were not flattened. This is the only Hirtenberger ammunition I've tried so I cannot comment as to any other type of it. Best.

Was probably the regualar pistol ammo.

The SMG stuff I have seen fly from 1600FPS to 18!!! That is way not cool unless your shooting out of an MP5 or Uzi.

The 100 gr +P+ does 1275 fps out of at 4 inch barrel. That is wimpy compared to standard loading of 3N37.

The +P+ does make more noise than you Federal 115 gr military ammo.

The round that George is referring to is a 124 grain fmj. It is the hottest 9mm ammo I've ever shot. Believe it or not, Hirtenberger states that this ammo is safe in a Glock 17, and I have shot some of this stuff safely through a 17, although I would not characterize it as a pleasant experience.

The other round mentioned is Hirtenberger's 9mm FL. This is a 100 grain truncated cone flatpoint with an exposed lead tip. This round is not as hot as the 124 grain load, and is carried by Austrian State Police in their Glocks and MP5s. The round is rated at 1475fps out of an 8" test barrel. The round is designed to penetrate autobodies and auto glass. Hirtenberger's tests show that this projectile will penetrate 18" of ballistic gelatin after passing through two .04" mild steel plates. The exposed lead tip supposedly helps the round "bite" into sufaces when striking at an oblique angle, so that it will either penetrate, or at least breakup, to prevent ricochets. Hirtenberger produces an excellent product.
