Hillary Demanding Royal Treatment?
In medieval times commoners had to avert their gaze whenever royalty passed, as a sign of respect for the divine right of kings.
Apparently Hillary Clinton is a big fan of the less than egalitarian tradition, if the story passed along by WABC Talk Radio's Steve Malzberg is true.
For weeks Malzberg has been telling his audience about a staffer at another New York radio station where Mrs. Clinton granted one of the regular hosts an interview. Malzberg's source says strict orders were issued: No one is allowed to make eye contact with the first lady.
"After I told that story on the air, I got a call from a cop who said he'd been assigned to help with Mrs. Clinton's security when she came to town," Malzberg told NewsMax.com Monday. "The guy told me the same thing, that everybody was ordered not to look directly at Hillary."
Talk radio rumor mongering? Maybe.
But then there's this account from former FBI agent Gary Aldrich, included in his 1996 best seller, "Unlimited Access."
"A senior permanent employee, who I knew to be a strong supporter of the Clintons, had looked forward to meeting [the first lady]. He held a position that ensured that some day he would."
Aldrich's friend was stunned by what happened when he finally got his chance.
"Working up his best smile, he said, 'Good morning, Mrs. Clinton.' She stared right through him. He told me it was as if she had 'pierced his skull with laser beams.'"
Aldrich says another staffer witnessed the incident from her office and later approached his friend.
"John, I guess you didn't get the word?"
"What word?"
"When 'Queen Hillary' walks down the hall, you're not supposed to look at her. You're actually supposed to go into an office if there is one nearby. She doesn't want staff 'seeing' her. And I know she sure as hell doesn't want to meet you or any other staffer!"
"You have to be kidding me!" John replied.
"No, we got the word at a staff meeting. It's true. Look around. Do you see anyone else in the hall?"
"John looked around," writes Aldrich, "and sure enough people were starting to emerge, like prairie dogs peeking out of their burrows after a hawk had flown past."
Of course, Clinton defenders say stories like these are just the fantasies of conspiratorial Hillary haters, that the first lady really does "like" the little people.
Yet when we told Malzberg about Aldrich's account, it was news to him.
What an amazing coincidence that the New York radio host managed to "fantasize" the same story told by the former FBI agent four years earlier.
