High velocity.45 ACP ammo?

IMO,a standard loaded 230gr HP that is not a +p will be much more effective despite a tad more recoil.
I may be wrong but a lite grain bullet with high FPS will cause more muzzle flip like a .40 creates.Im not 100% sure on that thinking tho.

I do know you will get less penetration with a lighter grain bullet, even if the FPS is higher.
These guys have what you want.

And again maybe not.

The lightest projectile I've used in a .45 ACP is 185 grains.
I used these when Remington first came out with their 185gr JHP's in the 70's. After a number of notable failures with the round were discussed in the gun media, I returned to the 230gr JHP loads. In a shorter barrel (e.g. officer's model or defender) I'll use a 200gr JHP +P from a known quality manufacturer. They work fine in the longer barrels too.

The standard pressure 185's will give you a lot less recoil. But I'd still prefer the 200gr JHP for defensive work. My Commander sized guns are typically loaded with 230gr FMJ, Hydrashok or Gold Dots.

A 9mm has much lower felt recoil and shoots much lighter bullets too. Try one if the .45 is too much for you. I have both and feel comfortable with either.

I’m looking for something with low recoil that can still operate reliably in my Colt Commander.

Man up and learn to shoot 230gr ammo.

It ain't the arrow. It's the indian.

Either that... or move down to the kiddie bows and 9mm "arrows."

Federal makes Low Recoil Personal Defense ammo, a 165 grain bullet at the velocity of a standard 185/

I like this 200 gr Hornady standard speed, about like the original 1905 load but a hollowpoint.

The Remington 185 gr Golden Sabre will kick no more than that old plain JHP that BillCA gave up on, but with better expansion.

Sorry this stuff is out of stock at Midway, but you can look around.

Realistically, any standard velocity 185 gr JHP is going to be about the lowest recoil you can find in a real defense load.

It's all about pressure

I like the 230's in the full sized guns. Pressure is lower, so felt recoil is lower. The 185's are more of a sharp smack to the web of the hand.
I have a madly expanding 185 Gold dot 45 Super load that breaks up the skin on my strong hand in short order.

Gee, and I thought that .45ACP 230gr rounds ARE low recoil. I certainly feel that way after shooting them from my 1911 and then some .357 magnum rounds out of one of my S & W revolvers. IMO, the .357s kick MUCH harder, even from a model 27 that outweighs my 1911 by 7 ounces.

Back when I was shooting in a league we had a couple of guys shotting 155 grain semi wadcutters in .45's. LOUD. Worse with a comp. Yes, the total impulse is less, but the recoil has a very sharp feel.

Your best bet: Either learn to relaod, and use the H&G #69 200 grain semi-wadcutter, or find a commercial reloader and buy in bulk. Use plenty of taper crimp in either case. Cuts a real clean hole in paper, or game, for that matter. Flies pretty flat at 180 power factor (bullet weight in grains, x velocity in fps, divide by 1000) out to 100 yards. I found the H&G 68 to be the best compromise of recoil, feeding, availability, accuracy, etc.

I think Pow"RBalls will serve you well. That's what a pro shooter/instructor I know at the range use's for an SD round.

I've also seen them in a magazine for a Wilson Combat ad for there .45acp 8 shot liftime mags. I'm sure if they weren't good they would not show them in there product.

Basic physics says that the most 'comfortable' recoil is accomplished with the heaviest projectile weight and the lightest powder load necessary to cycle the weapon.

So the load considered ideal for comfort and cycling reliability would be 230 gr. hardball (any 230 gr. bullet, really) with just enough powder to make major power factor (180, see definition above). Another way to put it, buy the cheapest 230 gr. box ammo, which is usually FMJ hardball and goes well beyond satisfying major power factor arithmetic.

John CB7,

What is it that you are looking to do that the 185 gr. to 230gr. rounds are not doing for you now? Or to ask it another way, what are you looking for?

A 200 gr. SWC style load at 700-750 fps are typically used in bullseye shooting with the 1911 and wheelguns. Soft shooting and low recoil.

I believe Cor-Bon made some 165 gr. +p .45ACPs, but I that might be wrong. When I carried a G30, I kept it loaded with 230gr. h.p. ammo of various manufacture.

I remembered one...
Atlanta Arms .45 JHP Match AMU load has a 185 gr Nosler at 825 fps. This is pretty much Charles Petty's .45 Lite load he wrote up a while back. I did not see the point then, but I did not have arthritis then.

When I had a 45, 185 gr. speer JHP's with standard load Unique powder worked great, about as much recoil as a 9mm.My 3.6" barreled Firestar loved it. I scored a perfect 250 with that pistol when I got my CHL...
