"High Thumb" with USP?

Does anyone out there shoot their USP with a "high thumb" hold, ala 1911? Just curious...
Thanks!

I ride my thimb on 1911s.

I don't have to on USPs, there's room for the thumb below without fear of rising up on the safety.

I prefer "less room" and riding my thumb.

I also shoot with a high thumb on 1911's.

On my USP's, however, I extend my thumb below the safety/decock lever as sufficient downward pressure on the multi-purpose lever could potentially decock the pistol. Also, the safety/decock lever is higher than the safety on the 1911, and attempting to "ride" my thumb on the lever moves the web of my average sized hand away from the backstrap, weakening my grip. YMMV.

I shoot high thumb on my USPs, but I had all of them converted to Variant 9 (no decocking feature, safety only.) I like keeping the manual of arms for all my defensive pistols the same.

Yup... Same Same.
Its best to use the same methods with each gun, if you can. Small guns require a different grip - and I shoot all small guns the same when possible as well.

Arnistador:

I have been thinking about converting my variant one H&K USP40c into a variant nine.

Did you get yours done by the factory? If so, can you tell us how much it cost and how long it took?

Also, does anyone know if I can keep my USP in variant one, but just switch out the hammer with the one from variant nine (so I can actually thumb cock the hammer).

Thanks.

Are you talking about a one-handed, target shooting grip or are you talking about a two-handed, combat-style grip? For me and for some reason when I do one-handed, target shooting I prefer a high thumb grip, with thumb not contacting the gun. This grip gives me a smoother release of the trigger while keeping the sights on target.

After about a year and a half of searching, I finally found a source of Variant 9 detent plates for the USP. All USP's use the same Variant 9 plates, so it matters not whether you have a compact or full size.

You can get the plates from Fountain Firearms at http://www.fountainfirearms.com or 281-561-8447. They cost about 10 bucks.

I shoot with my thumb as high as I can get it on the frame. This also means that on Sigs and Glocks, it usually rests right on the slide lock lever, keeping the slide from locking open on an empty magazine. I've learned to live with it and compensate accordingly.
