High Standard shotgun mystery

First of all I would like to say hello to all of the fellow TFL members as I am new here and have been reading the posts here for a while and am very impressed with this site. There are a great bunch of folks here and the interest shown in the love of firearms and shooting sports is outstanding. Now, to the question I have concerning a shotgun I've recently aquired. I have in my possesion a High Standard "Field Classic" pump shotgun. It looks very much like the Flite King version although it does not have the vent rib. I believe it is a modified choke barrell as there are two stars on the barrell shank near the reciever. Ingraved on the barrell are the words Field Classic. The furniture is beautiful walnut and the only plastic on the gun is the buttcap below the pistol grip portion of the stock annd the white spacer and recoil pad. I took the gun out and fired it this morning and cycled some 2 3/4 turkey loads and some field loads and was very impressed with the way the gun handled and the recoil seemed very manageable with the high brass loads. I'm very happy with this gun but am curious as to about when it was made and if any one else has any pros or cons on this gun? Thank you for any information.:)

Weeel, I'll hazzard that yours was made tween 1960-1966. I have heard nothing regarding goods or bads.

Pop bought a Flite King 20 gauge for a loaner. I used it a couple times and was unimpressed. Action was a bit rough and it had feeding glitches sometimes that a rather good smith was unable to remedy. Trigger was very heavy too.

On the upside, it seemed to balance and swing nicely,if memory serves. Carried nice too, lighter than a standard 870. Decent wood and good wood to metal fit, IMO.

I wouldn't want it for "Serious" shotgunning or as a gamer gun, but it should serve well in the hunting field. Parts might be available from Gun Parts Corp if needed.

High Standard shotgun

Thank you for your replies! The shotgun I have is a 12 gauge High Standard. I'm not familiar with the 20 g. version so can't add any more than what's been shared. I've owned Mossbergs, Remingtons, Winchesters and they have proven to be good reliable shotguns. I concur to the solid reliability of the 870 Wingmaster and am fond of the Mossbergs performance as well. The Winchesters in the model 12 and 97 are legendary and I would very much like to have a model 12 sometime in the future. I bought the High Standard after a close inspection of the gun at the shop I purchased it from and researched as much as what was available on the internet and some reference material I have in my small library( the book rack next to the "throne" in my upstairs bathroom) and didn't find any negatives about the gun. My goal was to have a somewhat "vintage" pump shotgun that was all steel in construction and adorned with walnut furniture. The High Standard fit the bill and my pocketbook as well. It fit's me well and pulls up very nice to my line of sight. I did a thorough detail cleaning before I fired the gun and it is very smooth and seems to be better than any of the aforementioned brands in how it recoils with high brass loads. It would be safe to say that a good fitting shotgun is less apt to stomp you than one that is not. This gun appears to have been used by someone who took very good care of it and is broken in nicely. As time goes by, I'll post further about this gun as I intend to hunt with it. Again, thank you for the replies!:D
