High Standard 1911-A1

A while back I started a thread on thinking about getting a 1911. I was looking at the springfield mil-spec. I like the basic version of the 1911.

The local pawn shop I just went to has a High Standard 1911-A1 with matt finish and regular GI sights. Its almost exactly what I want and I can get it for $400, about $200 or so less than what I was expecting to spend.

So what do any of you know about these guns? I know they make really good 22s but didn't even know they made 45s.

It's not the same Hi Standard as years ago. They're made and imported by Armscor, a Phillipine company that bought the licensing. There's a few Phillipine companies manufacturing guns and from what I've read (although limited) they're not bad for the money. Although I don't have any first hand info for you.

I have one; bought it as a truck gun because it was inexpensive. Mine is made in the Philippines. It has been trouble-free. it is not picky about ammunition, it seems to digest just about anything I feed it. It appears to be worth the money. It probably does not matter to you, does not to me, but it is not a faithful replica of a 1911A1.

There is a Pawn shop about 12 miles from me and they always price there guns $100 and more than what there worth. Go figure

$20 difference between Bud's and local shop.

Buy local. Keep your gun store in business.

dwhite I am all supporting the local dealer but the price they want for the used gun is more than what a new gun will cost even with the shipping added in.

Plus you never know on a used 1911 what some homegrown gunsmith may have done to it. If I could get that gun for $300-325 OTD I would do it. And I may go back and talk to them but then again I would have no problem spending just a little more for a brand new in the package gun with a warranty.

You really better know what you are looking at when dealing with pawn shops. I got took pretty bad on a guitar when I was about 16 by a pawn shop and insulted when trying to sell them a guitar after that. Thats why I asked this question and boy howdy am I glad I did.

You can get a brand-new Turkish 1911 from Bud's for $400 last time I checked. I love mine.

I think the brand-new Rock Island Armory is a little less than that. My stepbrother loves his.

Bought mine a little while back not knowing anything about it (paid $350 OTD at a gunshow). I was a little surprised to find out it was an Armscor when I got it home to look at it. I've only got a little over 500 rds thru it but it doesn't choke on my cast SWC loads. No frills I was going to use it to learn the platform and customize but I'm starting to like it the way it is. Here's 32 rds at 21 feet from the first trip to the range.
