High School Rodeo and Shooting Sports

The Wyoming State Junior & High School Rodeo Championships are being held in Newcastle this weekend.

One of the events is shooting sports (NRA Light Rifle). This is the second year in a roll I got the pleasure in running these matches.

Now I've been firearm instructing for 40 years or so, I've dealt with military, Law Enforcement, civilians, men and women, 4H and Boy Scouts.

Without a doubt these rodeo kids are the best I've dealt with, they are safe, attentive, polite, and all in all a great bunch of kids to be around.

I hope I get to do it again next year.
 
My hat is off to you Sir. Your service to your country and to the youth of Wyoming is greatly appreciated. These are the events that need nationwide attention but rarely ever get beyond the local news. More young people need to learn the respect and honor that comes from the discipline of competitive shooting. In todays difficult times the skill,knowledge and attitude necessary to safely and accurately use firearms needs to be passed to every young person we can contact. May you continue to guide young ones in our great sport.
 
That's pretty neat, Captain.

There is nothing quite like holding court in front of a bunch of wild-eyed 12 year olds as you explain the inner working of the mysterious rimfire rifle.

Pops always said that the most fun he ever had with me when I growing up was when he coached the 4-H shotgun team when I was in 7th grade.

Sidenote: Both my sister and I did Junior Rodeo growing up, she was quite the barrell racer. I, however, despite being a moden day cavalry man, still have problems mounting a horse, much less riding a broncing one.
 
Thanks for your service. New shooters have to come from somewhere and it's nice to see they are getting a good start. I took shooting lessons at my local YMCA growing up. Sadly that option is no longer available there.

FYI: I think Reba McEntire was a barrel racer in junior rodeo as well as a basketball star and look how she turned out. (IMhO very well.)
