Hiding My Gun

I don't know if this has been brought up before. I am not asking where exactally you keep your gun because I am sure some of you would not like to tell. But if you wouldn't mind telling me I would sure listen.

Is anyone concerned about someone breaking in and stumbling upon your HD shotgun? I am very timid about leaving it out of the locker because of this, yet I wouldn't mind it being next to my bed. Taking it out and putting it back in the locker everyday seems like it would be a hassle after awhile. Just looking for some opinion. Thanks for your time.
 
A friend of mine had the same general problem, PLUS he has kids.

His answer was a Mossberg Loc-Box.
Next to his bed is a window.
He attached the box beside the window, where it can be reached from the bed.
The window curtains cover the gun so it can't be seen.

Most thieves don't think to look behind an open curtain next to a window, and the gun is safe from kids and thieves since they can't get the box open, or rip it off the wall.

A possibly even better option is the finger-touch opening shotgun lock from Sportsman's Guide.

I leave my 870 loaded next to my door so that if someone opens it they won't see it, plus its ready to go if the need should arise. If I had kids, I suppose I would have all my guns locked up.
 
I take mine out at night and lock it back up before I leave for work. Not really a hassle at all and the safe is not even in my bedroom. I do keep my shoes in the same room as the safe and it is just habit now to take the SG back to safe and put on my shoes before I leave for work. I guess I am easily trained!

i have no kids but i have the gun on the inside of a walk in closet above the door on hooks...it sits there.

so you walk in the closet and see nothing....have to turn around and look up above the door.

easy acess and out of the reach of little ones as its to high...

my thoughts anyway.

In the bedroom, I have my shotgun between the bed and the wall. There is only enough room to fit your hand down there and it does not look like anything would be there if you just looked.
 
I don't have a shotgun, but I keep my handgun in the huge pile of books on the nightstand next to my bed. Not on top of it, but buried in it. It hides it well, except for when I have to go rummaging through the pile for a book.

Ever see how fast a burglar can toss a room, and in minutes, have every thing laying on the floor and exposed? One swipe in two seconds and your gun isn't "hidden" anymore. Have a safe for when you aren't there if you're gun is at home.

When I am home, I'd want quicker access than having to retrieve it from under a pile of books. When I leave the house I carry my HG and my combat SG goes in my safe.
 
I agree with Nnobby about BG's tossing your house. Happened to me.

Nimitz - your idea is good, except that it's a walk-in closet which does allow them to see it. Years ago a friend kept his M1 Carbine on hooks inside & above the hall-closet door. You had to really look to see it and if you weren't at least 5'9" tall, you couldn't get it off the hooks easily (he was 6'3").

The best bet is either a safe, or if you only have the one gun, something like that Mossberg shotgun holder. You can order one from Gun Parts Corp for $30. They're a great company. See this page.
 
BillCA when i say a walk in closet i mean that theirs a door to it...so even if the door is open (90%) when im home you cant see the SG..+ its mounted pretty damn high... 6'4 here so no little ones could get it...

trust me you cant see it if you dont know its there...got the idea from the site and it works great...here a noise jump up run 2 steps and im armed...works for me...

Against the same wall as my bed the long way, at the foot of the bed where my bookcase is, in between the bookcase and the wall.

It's really not there unless you know it is. :)


I imagine if a burgler tossed the room he'd see it, but then again, who would toss a room that looks (for lack of a better term) absolutely worthless? The rest of the house looks promising, but not this room.

I suppose I should get it locked up eventually, but I don't see the need.
 
Built a closet into our old house but didn't finish inside above the door; single shot shorty (legal) lived there. Would love to rig old fashioned 4" door frame to swing out and expose 870HD!
 
There is a program on one of the cable channels called "It takes a thief" or something similar.

A "former"house Burglar and his buddy set up cameras so homeowners can watch the "Former" thief break in and toss the house. The Homeowners then get a free security remake and of course their stuff is returned.

Most informative program! Pro thieves know all the hiding places! You are not going to fool them. Best bet is a sturdy safe bolted down. They actually took a safe that was not affixed in place, with them on a handtruck!!!

One dude had his rifle under a pile of dirty laundry, I mean a PILE of dirty laundry. First place the "Thief" looked.
 
ummm...

this may be weird but I would never have my guns locked up because a unloaded gun is worthless. when I ccw I would probably keep them locked up or hidden, but for now they are loaded and in my closet ready to use. I do admit, I did grow up in the country where nobody lockes their car up and some even leave it in the ignition. ( we never left the keys in there) I am spoiled, I live in the city now. :) :) :p

Mine cost 400 bucks, and is not fireproof, . . . but it is a good bet to keep the bg's busy too long if they broke in and wanted to snatch my guns.

My laptop computer goes in on the top shelf along with virtually all of the guns when we are not here, . . . the door is open and all the weapons are available when we are.

Kids come around, . . . close the door and spin the dial, . . . end of problem.

No kids here. I keep one by the bed at night, and the rest are in various safes in the den. The safes are all bolted to the floor, and to the studs in the wall. Then there are the dogs, the alarms, bars in the windows, and the very sturdy steel doors and frames. Still, I know if someone wants my junk bad enough, its gone.........

That show is on the discovery channel. Its a pretty good show, in my opinion. Definately worth a look.

I don't have a shotgun, I just keep my loaded Glock next to my bed. I really need to get a gun safe of some kind.
 
I have some cheap guns that are probably only good as scrap metal laying about...they look decent on the outside. Hopefully if its some guy going for a quick score they will grab the junk and run.

The good stuff is in the gun vault.

plus I have deadbolts that are keyed on the inside also...
