How does one install the cylinder in a Sentinel R-101? It seems as if the "link pivot pin" (PN #7140) is spring-loaded and should be depressed to allow the "crane assembly" (PN #7157) to fit into the frame, but the pin doesn't depress easily and asking for advice seemed like a better idea than trying to force it.

I hope I'm using these terms (from the parts list) correctly. What I'm calling the "link pivot pin" is like an axle around which the cylinder pivots when it is swung open. Although it may be obvious... I'm not experienced with handguns.
 
The link pivot pin is hollow and inside it is the cylinder stop spring. The other end of that spring fits around a projection on the cylinder stop. When assembling that gun it is common to put the spring in beside the cylinder stop projection rather than around it, and things won't go together. Assuming you didn't remove the cylinder stop, see if you can pull out the link pivot pin; that might require using a knife blade in the crane slot.

Anyway, when you get the link pivot pin out, fit the spring over the cylinder stop, then install the link pivot pin.

Once things are OK there, push the link pivot pin in with a small punch or small screwdriver, and slip the crane into the slot, pulling the punch or screwdriver out so the link pivot pin can snap into the hole in the crane.

Move to "Smithy"

Thanks, Jim. But I may have myself in a worse pickle now.

Neither knife nor needle-nosed pliers would move the pin out, so I thought I'd try to free it up by pushing it in a bit. Simply pressing on a punch wouldn't budge it, so I tapped on the punch lightly with a plastic hammer. The pin not only freed up --- it slipped almost completely inside the frame and is stuck there. Just a tiny bit of the nose of the pin is sticking out into the crane slot. (More was available a few minutes ago, but trying to grip that tapered pin with thin needle-nosed pliers was a mistake. It just recessed farther into the frame, to its present location.)

I've dripped some Hoppe's oil onto the pin's nose, hoping the compressed spring will eventually push it out. That's about the extent of my ideas!

EDIT: Looking over other posts in the Revolver Forum and exploring further in "The Firing Line," it seems as if this discussion better fits in the "Smithy" forum. I started a thread there and will abandon this one.

OK, the only way out will be to pull the gun completely down and pull the grip frame (trigger guard and grip) down and back from the upper frame. That means driving out the hammer pin and easing the hammer back so the grip frame can come clear. Ordinarily, the link pivot pin keeps the front from coming down but if it is all the way back the grip frame should come off.

Usually the link pivot pin will come out if you just rap the end of the barrel hard, but if it doesn't, the above is the "plan b".
