Hi standard i.d. & history

I have recently acquired a .22 Cal. Hi Standard semi-automatic handgun. It was made in the New Haven, CT factory, it is a Model "A" with a serial number of 54283. Can someone tell me the year of manufacture and if it has antique value? The gun is pristine and shoots extremely well. Thanks....Jim

Oddly enough, the Model A was not the first H-S model; for some reason I don't know, they began with the Model B, then went to C, then to A. Further, models were not designated sequentially; several models were in production at the same time and they were all numbered in the same series.

As close as I can determine, your gun, 54283, was made in mid-1940.

It should be a good gun, but I would stick to standard velocity .22 Long Rifle and avoid the High Velocity/High Speed loadings.

If you have not field stripped that gun, please either get a manual or learn how before you do. More than one H-S has been ruined by an incorrect takedown.

Thanks for the quick reply and info Jim. I have field stripped the gun and it is pristine inside as well as out. I intend to continue to use the standard ammo for it. It really shoots well and is extremely accurate. It belonged to my wife's late father and is very special to us. Thanks again.

Likely spent too much time with the Ford people.

No, Ford's first model was the Model A. Old Henry went through a bunch of experimentals and trial models before he hit it big with the Model T. Then, when the car was revamped (over Henry's objections), they decided to start with A again on the new platform.
